Guest guest
Dear Aadiji, Namaste!!! I agree!! It looks exactly like a Lightning Whelk shell with bogus ridges in the conch cavity. Where is our Shank expert Sri Chandrashekarji to guide us? Note: The person selling this possibly bogus Valampuri also offers to sell a $25,000 ruby for $240, and also sells synthetics. So It is most probably bogus to the core. I have a real Valampuri and it is quite different, being a conch, and not a whelk shell. More comments welcome. Guest guest
cavity. These vertical ridges are called as 'Pilae'. Rarely, three and half, four or even five such pilae are seen. In extremely rare specimens seven such pilae are seen. Presence of these pilae is not only external, but is also a part of the conch columella. These pilae appear on columella similar to threading structure of a screw and can easily be seen in conch X-Ray. In simple words, columella of Indian sacred conch (dextral or sinistral) shows screw type structure with three threadings. In case of lightening whelk, there is total absence of such pilae or vertical ridges in the conch cavtity. The columella of Whelk is therefore plain in its structure and do not show the presence of 'Screw Threading Structures' on its columella in X-Ray images. In case of fake specimens made from whelk by pasteing such pilae or ridges, columella appears plain if X-Ray is taken. Thanking you and with personal regards, Chandrashekhar Phadke Chandrashekhar Phadke. Richard Shaw-Brown II <rsbj66 > wrote: Dear Aadiji,Namaste!!! I agree!!
