The divine within us will show us the right way. We can correct our actions and move towards higher self without thinking about re-birth. As you said in this materialistic world we easily reason our actions and satisfy our selves rather then to get to the root of the problem and get the truth. This subject is endless and fathomless and one can go on arguing about it timeless. So suffice it to say that every human soul tries to do only good things but the destiny provides otherwise.
