Guest guest
reference to Ganesh is only in the 8th century Tamil text, the Malatramadhava. Widespread worship only began from the 10th century. Early accounts had Ganesh as the son of Ambica, sister of Rudra. Later this was changed to Parvati consort of Shiv. There are at least a dozen contradictory and sometimes obscure myths about his creation though the version in the Matsa Purana is the one most widely accepted. In the Skanda Purana, Shiv in a moment of generosity had decreed that all worshippers going to Somnath would get access to heaven making it crowded with undesirables. Uma's curse then produced an ugly guardian in the form of Ganesh. The Shiv Purana has an even more bizarre account. In still another Puranic account Parvati worshipped Vishnu seeking a son and Vishnu decided that he would himself become the new-born baby. When the gods came to congratulate Parvati Shani kept his eyes down because his jealous wife had cursed him so that anyone he looked at would perish. At Parvati's insistence he looked at the baby's head and it flew to the heavens. Parvati then cursed him so he became lame and Vishnu replaced the missing head with that of a sleeping elephant.
