EditMode="false">Anaya Nayanar Tirumangalam was an important place of

pilgrimage in Trichnopoly District in South India. The Lord Who dwells in this

place is called Samavedesvarar. It was He Who purified ParasuRama of the sin of

killing his mother and also gave him the axe. In that enchanting place,

there was a cowherd by name Anayar. Because he was tending cows, he was known

by that name. He is a great inspiring example for a person leading a very

simple life reaching the highest state of yoga - getting the liberation and

unification with the Almighty - just by the whole hearted love for God. He is a

devotee who worshipped the Lord with the music. He was devoted to the Bhasma,

and also to Siva Bhaktas, irrespective of their status. His devotion to the

Lord took the form of playing on his flute the holy Panchakshara Mantra of

Siva. He aspired to realise the Lord, through this Mantra. His love flowed

from his heart, to his blessed lips as a jet of modulated air to flow through

the flute in his hand, spread over the entire forest and anoints the Lord. He

selected a bamboo which had all the superior qualities that are said in the

scriptures and made a flute as per the rules (Song: 13 Anaya Nayanar Purana in

Periya Purana talks about the way flute was made). He played the holy five

letters of the Lord in the flute with the tune of seven swarams. Periya Purana

dedicated to great devotees of Lord Siva. One day when he was playing the

Mantra

on his celestial instrument, under a Konrai tree (a favourite of Lord Siva), the

sight of the very konrai flower reminded him of the merciful Lord who wears that

flower. He could see only Siva there. Wherever he saw all the flowers appeared

as the form of the Almighty. His mind could do nothing but meditating at that

appearance. His thinking could do nothing but surfacing his great love for the

God. He could do nothing but showing his unexplainable feelings through his

flute. His feelings could do nothing but making the sound of the holy five

letters in his flute. (Songs 24 - 28 in Periya Purana show clearly the

technique of playing flute). The music captivated all the cows and calves.

Even the birds sat on trees and silently heard the enrapturing music of the

flute. The peacocks danced in joy, keeping time with the music. Hearing the

music, other animals stood motionless. The music captivated the hearts of the

deer, snakes, lions, elephants, tigers, etc. The snake and the peacock, the

lion and the elephant, shed their enmity and lived together happily. The rivers

stopped in their course. The waves in the sea calmed, to hear the music of

Ayanar. Even the celestials (Vidyadharas, Kinnaras and Devas,) came in their

celestial cars to hear the music. The Lord was immensely pleased with

Ayanar’s sincere devotion. The sweetness of the music of the flute and the

effect of the Panchakshara Mantra both

melted His heart. He appeared before Nayanar, with the Mother of the Universe

(Parvathi), blessed him and took him to Kailas. Sivaya Namah
