Guest guest
Omkar AUMKar is the beginning of all mantras. It is the starting Beejakskshar (Fundamental sound), of Shiva Panchakshari (Five sounds of Shiv Mantra), AUM Namah Shivaya. Some schools of thought believe that AUM is the guiding Beejakshar for Aagna Chakra, the Trinetra or fore head Chakra in the series of Shat Chakras. Once a Veda pundit or a scholar was giving religious discourses to the group of people gathered. He said by chanting the mantra one can cross great Rivers and mighty oceans. The power of this mantra cannot be explained in plain words, it has its great miracle hidden in itself, he continued. These words were overheard by milk maids who were passing bye. They decided to cross the stream by chanting the mantra without using the paid services of a barge. They could cross the stream without any difficulty. It went on. They discussed among them and approached Vedic Scholar with a request to accept the honour in lieu of great advice rendered by him. Pundit gladly accords his approval for the offer. The Milkmaids said that they would take him to their village the next day that follows. The next day they took him to the stream and requested him to follow them to the village. All of them could cross the stream by chanting AUMKar. Veda Pundit stood on the bank witnessing the act in a great surprise. When milkmaids noticed that Pundit is not accompanying them they came back and enquired the reason for not coming with them. When prompted by the Milkmaids he wished to give an attempt. He told them to bring a big rope to tie one end around his waist the other to the tree to start with the exercise of AUM. For the first step he was alright but when he placed the second on the water he drowned in to the stream. Belief is the first step of any mantra to reap its blessings and to allow it to cleanse the Anthakarana (The inner soul). Belief brings perfection and perfection bestows peace. This aspect was explained in "ishopanishad" by a verse "AUM Poornam Adah, Poornamidam Poornaat poorna mudachayete, Poornasya Poorna maadaaya poornam evaa Vashishyateh". This means, Brahman, the Lord is in manifest form of perfection. Brahman without any attributes is supreme. All creations of Brahman with all attributes are perfect. As any thing evolves out of perfection is perfect. Perfect can be created from perfection. Keeping all perfection aside, the remaining thing is also perfect. The Mantra of AUM is otherwise known as Pranava Brahman which is the Lord by himself. Aum comprises of three basic sounds (Naadas). They are Aaa, Voo and Maa respectively. The first sound "Aaa" comes out from the base of the throat. Voo emanates from heart where as Maa evolves from the base of stomach. Though each chakra is governed by its dedicated beejakshar, Aum originates from all these three chakras for its uniqueness. The three sounds when uttered combined produces the sound (Naada) of Aumkar. Aumkar is responsible for bestowing three effects, the Jagridavastha (Wakefulness), the Swapnavastha (The dream) and Shushupti (Resting the mind beyond the territories of dreamland). By practicing "AUM", takes the Sadhak (The Practitioner) to a forth stage what is known as "Turiyaavastha". The stage where there is no difference or subtle difference between "Aatman" and Brahman or "Parammatman". It is the unique union of the two or otherwise known to be achieved the stage of "Advaita" Is it possible for anybody to keep continuing the stage of Turiya or Advaita for ever? Bhagawaan "Aadi Shankaraa Charya" had answered it. Sadhaka begins his meditation with Dwaitasthiti (The clear distinction between Atama and parammatma) and progressively travels and reach the stage of "Turiya", the great pleasure beyond the reach of modernistic happiness or joy. This pleasure one should have his experience and cannot be explained by words. Why are we not in a position to sustain this boundless happiness? In the material world Cause and effects are found to be intertwined with each other very strongly and are covered by Maya. Maya is the veil of illusion, is responsible for dragging one from this eternal pleasure. We should discuss this in detail in the next discussions that follow.
