Ayurveda information scattered across the net tempts people to go

for self medication. The success of online consultations which have become

possible recently remain to be evaluated. Sometimes this can produce negative

opinions as

appended message shows. This post is motivated by this reaction. When

ayurvedic herbs are used in proper manner and under prope health evaluation,

such reactions are eliminated.

Few cases of benign tumor like clots, cramps, muscle pains and loss of

sensations which came to this author required some investigation and

as a result, the culprits at root were found to be synthetic hormone pills. This

is being summarized here. Switching to bio-identical hormones along with

clot/tumor attacking medication of ayurveda resolved most of the cases in less

than 3 months.

In previous message# 6045, attempts to suppress availability of bio-

identical hormones in market have been discussed. The cancer risk was

suggested in message# 5508, while influence on central nervous system

in starting incontinence was indicated in message# 5925. In this post

author gives advantages and some side effects of popular synthetic

hormones. The experiences of some of the users are also included in

the form of a link where responses are recorded. In the end,

ayurvedic alternatives are discussed in a general way.

Let us first look at culprits:

Estrogen and Progestin (Prempro® or Premarin® + Provera®)

Pros: Reduces hot flashes and vaginal dryness. May slow bone loss in

some women.

Cons: Causes breakthrough bleeding, mood swings, fluid retention.

Significantly increases risk of breast and uterine cancer.

Selective Estrogen Reuptake Modulators (SERMs, notably Evista ®)

Pros: Unlike older HRT drugs, SERMs do not seem to boost risk of

breast cancer.

Cons: Increases hot flashes, boosts risk for serious blood clots in

the legs, lungs or eyes, especially for sedentary women. Can cause

severe leg cramps.

Estrogen Used Vaginally (Vagifem ®, Estring ®, Estrace ®)

Pros: Reduces vaginal dryness.

Cons: Has no effect on hot flashes. Headache, abdominal pain and

vaginal pain / irritation have been reported.

Estrogen Patches (Estracomb ®, Vivelle ®)

Pros: Convenient drug delivery through skin patch. Reduces hot

flashes and vaginal dryness.

Cons: Can cause skin irritation at the patch site. May cause nausea

and vomiting. Other side effects are similar to those from HRT pills:

breakthrough bleeding, fluid retention and mood swings.

Ayurvedic approaches:

Use of Shatawari extracts or mixture of Shatawari, Ashwagandha,

Vidarikand, cow urine distillates made using kashayas of these,

Arishtas such as Ashokarishta, Dasmularishta, Arjunarishta and Kumari

Aasava and ghrutam such as Shatawari ghrutam, Khadir Ghrutam, Phal

ghrutam, were used depending on each case. Stress, anxiety disorders

were tackled by using brahmi vati, saraswatarishta etc. Ayurveda

offers a wide scope for treating peri-post menopausal problems.

Combination of these herbal medicines together with panch karma

treatments such as swedan, virechan, vaman could reduce obesity too

to a comfortable level. Meditation/breathing techniques were taught

where patient showed willingness and had time.
