Guest guest
Dear Dr. bhate, In the last newsletter, you had a long post about health and you mentioned how kidneys eventually get affected. About a month ago, I found out my brother had a kidney stone removed. I sent out this recipe I found called "French Fries with Gravy and Cheese" . It was sent out as a joke because all 3 of these main ingredients are recipes for a heart attack and the overkill(pun intended) of American society. My brother said thanks and that he was going to make it for a dinner party. I wrote back and said"And this is okay for yor kidneys?". He said that his doctor said he should not eat anything with oxalates in them like beet greens, rhubarb, spinach, tofu, beansberries and nuts. I know that most naturopaths in this country would probably say that rhubarb , spinach and beet greens are not the best thing for a person with kidney problems. I also understand that tofu is hard to digest. However, have you or anyone else heard that berries, nuts and beans are hard on the kidneys? I told him I use a totally different model based on digestability. It would seem to me that doctors in this country only look at certain substances and make judgements based on those substances like oxalates. I always thought that beans and strawberries were some of the best things for the kidneys. There are other compounds that make them work synergestically. People in the US regard MDs as gods. They believe almost anything they say. Do you think I am out of line or does my brother actually have some good points? What does Ayurveda have to say about eating berries, nuts and beans and those other things and how they affect the kidneys? When we eat, we are eating the whole plant and not just the oxylic acid.
