Dear GB

Panch Gavya medicines use all five raw materials you listed. Milk, in

its raw form is not taken in any medicines, but turned into curd and

ghee for use in medicines. By far, maximum use is made of cow urine

for making medicines due to its strong properties giving antibiotic,

antifungal, antiviral effects in addition to increasing bio-

availability of other medicines.

Cowdung is used after oxidizing it partially to make tooth powder.

Curd is used in a medicine known as 'Takrarishta'.

Ghee is used to make at least 80 different types of medicines, those

aimed at treating nervous system problems, fertility problems,

depression, cardiac problems, eye disorders etc. A ghee to treat

depression of all types is known as 'Panchgavya Ghrutam' which

contains all these products.

Lastly, cowmilk itself is a good medicine for a number of conditions,

and also as adjuvant for other medicines.

With research spanning last ten years or so, Gowshalas have made

medicines using many other herbs along with above materials given by

cow. In south India, the day after diwali festival, all five

materials are mixed in and taken about 1 tbsp to ensure immunity for

the whole year. This custom prevails in Brahmin communities of

Tamilnadu.

After Puja, in every hindu household, they distribute what is called

Panchmruta. This has curd, honey, ghee, milk and a drop of cow urine

if available. Since cows are difficult to find in cities, now a days,

Panchamrut consists of first 4 items only.

Panch indicates 5, which are urine, milk, dung, ghee and curd. In

actuality, it seems that the medicines that are panch gavya are just

the urine. I understand that the urine is the most medicinal part.

Do the medicines use all 5 parts or just the urine?
