This author has addressed the issue of obesity developed after childbirth, in previous messages 1680,1688,1696, 3820,5288. You have not mentioned whether your baby was result of a normal birth, C- section or VBAC. Similarly, whether baby is being nursed, your m/c has restarted or not etc are factors to be considered. Since your question requires a consultaion with a local ayurvedist, author will like to give you a general range of problems and range of strategies possible. He also take's this opportunity to express some of his opinions, which may be contrversial to many. Women represent and control our future generation. If women lack the health, the future generation may look healthy at birth, but carries seeds of ill-health in the genes. In order that our next generation be better in health, it is first necessary to make women healthy. These considerations are similar to those in farming where farmer spends majority of time in making soil fertile. Since health of both body and mind is important, the dependence of women on father in childhood, husband/in-laws in middle age, and on children in old age does not allow sufficient development of her creative mind. Happy mind keeps one healthy automatically. One important indicator of the health is the regularity and adequacy of menstrual cycles. It is generally assumed that healthy menses give rise to healthy mind and body too. Any irregularity in health also affects the pattern of m/c. Since these two are so strongly correlated, author sometimes feels that Lord Brahma created women only for continuation of race, and teaching us, love sacrifice and tenacity. Too scanty menses is not much discussed disorder in most of alternative fields. Generally women tend to think that as long as every month menses appear on last months date plus one minus two days, everything seems in order. Slowly decreasing menses flow is not attached much importance. Pituitary, thyroid and ovarian glands play an important role in regulating both schedule and quantity of menses, through the hormones secreted by them. When the childbirth is vaginal, and without much modern medicine intervention, the cycles restart without much irregularity some time after the delivery. The tummy also returns to almost original shape. These days, C-sections have become very common and connection between C-section and hormonal imbalance has been discussed by this author in various posts last year. As a result of disturbing the whole program of childbirth, consequential imbalance in glands, which involves reduced secretions, the creatuion of all seven dhatus becomes disturbed. The agni which creates all seven dhatus, becomes subdued, and Mansa and Meda start increasing. The conversion of lower dhatus to higher ones such as Majja, Asthi and Veerya or Shukra gets slowed down appreciably. What are the results? Weight gain, reduced libido, lack of or reduced orgasmic intensity. Shukra dhatu controls libido, strength of orgasm etc. It is this dhatu that causes vaginal secretions prior to union. This last and most powerful dhatu, when reduces, causes debilitation of energy and paves way for entry of various diseases related to genitor-urinal system. When the quantity of menstrual flow or total flow over say six month period starts reducing, the situations becomes alarming. This is a pointer to imbalance of hormones. Under these circumstances, instead of taking tonics, ready formulatios widely advertised in media, it is better to do your own research and know the side effects of medicines. The super power which governs our body clocks does not take intervention in nervous system lightly. When meda starts accumulating, the tension of thinking about it sometimes increases the food intake. Temptation for sugars, soft-floors, fats specifically increases under hormone imbalance. One must be very cautious and take timely action for keeping check on obesity, else the menstrual flow gradually reduces and ultimately stops. Modern medical science calls this as perimenopause phase. While in olden days when bad fats were unknown, this phase occured after 45, but now a days, exceptional cases at 25 are noted in this authors limited experience. In this phase, skin dryness, reduced or absent vaginal secretion, skin diseases, hair-loss, palpitations or tachycardia, insomnia, night sweats, depression, brady-cardia, reduced or total lack of libido, weight gain despite controlled diet, anxiety, loss of temper, especially when spouse is concerned, sudden tears or doom feelings, finding fault with everyone, sudden mood changes or body odor changes in specific phase of weakening cycles, etc such symptoms are noted and are already summarized in file `perimeno.rtf' in folder `articles' in group files. The increase in urine infections, bad vaginal odor, is also experienced by many when cycles start reducing. The protective acidity of birth canal was the safety feature against infections granted as long as they were able to conceive easily. Ayurveda offers several classical formulations and herbs to compensated for reducing hormones during this phase of life. The herbs to mimic the cyclicity of hormones during two prominent phases of m/c, herbs to increase haemoglobin if there is a loss due to menorrhagia, herbs to improve digestion, reduce flatulence, bloating etc also exist. Since evry case is unique and so is `pulse reading' which herbs to choose, which formulations to choose are decisions, best left to Vaidya. Unlike modern medicines, none of the herbs cause imbalance to worsen or cause cancer/liver toxicity, in general. While best judge for the possible approach will be neighborhood Vaidya, some diet suggestions can be offered in an internet article. Reduce bad fats, increase good fats. Sesame oil, cow ghee, coconut oil are preferred ones in India, while author cant comment on what fats are good in other countries. However, he has indicated many tests for choosing fats in general, in earlier posts. Ayurveda generally recommends reduction of those foods which cause Pitta and Vata vitiation. Legumes, soft-carbs, processed foods, spicy foods etc. Carbohydrates such as rice, wheat and ordinary potato etc is a frequent recommendation, but this author feels that each individual is different. He has seen people on major carbohydrate diet, without putting up even a gram of weight in years! By crash dieting according to various internet protocols, women have reduced few kilograms of weight, but the weight loss reversed as soon as they turned to old habits. Obesity is one major risk factor in early peri-menopause. One should have realistic targets for weight loss, healthy exercises which will give all-round circulation rather than specific yogasanas or aerobics. These measures are not like allopathic pills, which are focused to specific symptoms. Once some weight loss occurs, regularity of m/c is also experienced by several. Guest guest
Dear Maham, First I would check on the things Dr Bhate informed you like regularity of menstruation and regularity of bowels. I can help you with exercise. A good brisk walk every day is very helpful. There are many good yoga asanas that are useful. I would work on the abdomen especially. This would include leg raises. There are many variations of this. Lie on the back. It is very important to keep the lowerback flat on the ground. If you have to place something under the buttocks (the hands can do this) and raise alternate legs in the air inhaling up and exhaling down. Also di it with both legs inhaling up and exhaling down. Raise the heels 24" above the ground andhold for a few seconds and then bring the knees as close to the chest as possible and keep repeating while inhaling legs out exhaling legs to chest. Shoulderstand is especially good to reverse the effects of gravity. Locust and cobra are excellent. Baby pose while sitting on heels and putting forehead on ground. The main thing is to assess what is workable for you to do on a daily basis and to do it consistenly every day.
