energetics of karela (bitter gourd)

Dear folks:

 

What are the energetics of Karela (bitter gourd); Rasa, Virya and Vipaka.

 

Is it similar to Neem? Is the bitter property of Karela similar to Neem and

can it be substituted in place of Neem for treatment puprose?

Dear keshav,

 

Karavellaka (Karela,Bitter gourd) posses, Tikta rasa mainly and

kashaya rasa as anurasa, Nimba (neem) is tikta rasa pradhana rasa and katu

anurasa.Karavellka is Laghu guna Nimba posses Laghu and Rooksha gunas

Both are Sheeta Veerya and Katuvipaka.

 

Both are Kaphapitta shamaka and Deepana drugs.Karavellaka is Grahi

where as Nimba is Bhedana.This is an important difference to be noted in

therapeutic action between them.I think you might know the impotance where to

use these.According to dravya guna basic principle it is said that

 

"KINCHID RASENA KURUTE KAARYAM KINCHID VEERYENA VIPAKENAVA......".

A drug may tekeup therapeutic action sometimes by virtue of

its rasa or veerya or vipaka or by all together.

 

Both are indicated in Krimi, prameha and ,jwara.

 

And Karvellaka indicated in pandu,Nimba indicated in Kusta and

Vrana.

 

Thus in every clinical condition and diseases karavellaka not to

be substitued,Except in similar indications allowed for both.For example in

prameha,krimi and jwara both can be substitud each other but not in Kusta etc..

 

Neem is more efficient in Kusta and Vrana but,karavellaka is

not...

 

Usage of any drug and clinical success depends on the sense,Deep

Knowldge over rasa,guna,veerya,vipaka etc.of the drugs and wisdom of the

physician.

 

Ayurveda say's

 

" Nighantu vinaa vaidyo vidhvaan vyakaranam vina

Abhyaasena vinaa Dhanuskah trayoo sadaa haasayabhajanam ".

 

(Here Nighantu means Dravya guna vignana)

 

So, a physician without a sound knowledge over theory and prctical labelled as

KUVAIDYA(Pseudo physician) by Maharshi CHARAKA
