Popping extra pain pills can hurt, doctors warn Acetaminophen poisonings from

accidental overdoses on the rise http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10608650/

(This drug is popularly named as Paracetamol or Crocin in India)

Overdoses contribute to heart complications Blood-thinning drugs can increase

the risk of serious bleeding, study finds http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10617359/

(Though this drug is more powerful than aspirin, "super aspirin", a similiar

warning has been issued for aspirin also as it has been connected to intestinal

bleeding)

Over the counter use of drugs is a very dangerous behaviour. One should always

consult a doctor and never self medicate based on the advice of pharmacists who

are usually not aware of latest findings. OTC drugs account for many of the

complications that are asribed to the medical system (any). In India rules have

been framed for stricter controls but implementation is extremely difficult.

There are also rules being framed that drug labels (for any kind of drugs,

mainstream or alternative) should contain a list of ingredients, side effects as

well as whether safety standards have been met. One should study the labels

carefully and consult the doctor if any complications appear. The patients

should also give full details of their illness and the medicines they are

consuming so that the doctor can weigh the options carefully.

Ordinarily patients on alternative treatments do not inform their doctor

fearing that they will be rebuked if the doctors find out they are consulting

other methods. The doctors themselves must act in a more open manner and not

unnecessarily rebuke or slander other systems so that the doctor patient

relation does not sour. In case of patients who are on mainstream medication,

they should not discontinue current medication abruptly but should act on the

opinion of the doctor who will know how to reduce the medication gradually.

Withdrawl symptoms from sudden discontinuation can be more dangerous than

disease and can even kill. One should be very careful in this regard.

Jagannath.
