Vegetarianism originated in India?

Indians have been behind some of the greatest discoveries and ideas

in the world. From mathematics, to astronomy to literature, to health

science in terms of ayurveda, Yoga, Tantra for self realisation, the

Indian mind has always been able to give form to abstract ideas and

concepts. Vegetarianism is just one more thing that we should thank

India for fostering. Non-aggresion policy of this country for last

10,000 years, can it be attributed to vegetarianism?

The true question is where did this movement start? According to some

scholars, the roots of this belief can be traced to India.

In this group there has been intense heated debate on vegetarianism

vs non-vegetarianism, which this author missed participating at that

time. Now too, he does not favour any specific side, nor wishes to

start the topic again, but wishes to bring out that though ayurveda

uses animal products in medicines, and recommends using animal flesh

for some patients, the vegetarianism movement must be having roots in

ayurvedic life-style. following link supports this to some extent.

If one traces out spread of ayurveda into oriental countries like China, one

will always feel that the notion "It is your science that cannot be learnt

through distance education, right?" expressed in one of recent messages is

in-appropriate. There has been always a whole hearty exchange between oriental

countries. Germany is the only western country which not only respected Indian

contributions, but studied them further. Its consistent interest even today is

clear by the fact that few Indian cows have been imported in Germany to study

the scientific secrets of cow therapy (Panch Gaavya) medicines.
