Hello to all,

I am doing research on patients with fibromyalgia and

chronic fatigue. I wonder if Ayurveda has an opinion

on the causes or possible treatments of this syndrome.

Does any one know something about it?

Thank you

Laia

Hello, I don't know much about the disease other than my mother has it. I just

wonder how much it has to do with a person's lifelong intake of water. My mom

always drinks Pepsi. I know she hasn't drank a glass of water in over 3 years.

My aunt is another pop drinker, with similar pains.

Hello Vince and Laia,

I am new to the group, so I suppose this also counts as a (long)

introduction. Namaste!

I have lived with chronic fatigue for five years and use yoga and ayurveda

along with other techniques to help minimise the symptoms. My chronic

fatigue may also be linked to a congenital heart condition and chronic

asthma I have lived with since I was a child, also there was a suspicion I

had developed Fybromyalgia in my teens. The addition of CFS to these

physiological defects has disabled me and I am unable to work. I am not a

Ayurvedic Practioner however, so my experience is self-taught, rather than

professional.

Vince is correct that drinking soda (especially those containing caffeine)

contributes to chronic fatigue - this is through dehydration. I have

recently read the work of F Batmanghelidj, 'Your Body's Many Cries for

Water', which explains the physiological effects of dehydration, including

chronic fatigue syndrome. I have minimised my intake of caffeine and/or

carbonated drinks (which acidify the blood) for four years and ensure I

drink plenty of clean water (minimum 2 litres = 4 pints) a day.

I have also found that I need to monitor my protein intake, ensuring I get a

handful of protein from milk, (I am vata-pitta), eggs, nuts, seeds or whole

grains at breakfast and my main meal. I am not vegetarian; I prefer these

foods as they are close to the ideal amino- acid content for replenishing

the body's reserves. I try to minimise the amount of processed food, white

sugar, flour, rice I eat.

I supplement with omega oils 3,6,9 a herbal-food based

multivitamin-multimineral formulated to be taken 3x a day. I have found

supporting the liver with a warm tea of cider vinegar, honey, ginger and

lemon beneficial. Also the use of shitake mushroom and seaweed extracts

appears to have an effect.

I do 40 minutes of yoga six days out of seven, meditate for 20 - 40 minutes

a day, use a tongue scraper and have found that hot saunas / steam rooms

eliminate the muscle pains of chronic fatigue if taken 2-3 times a week.

Once a week before sauna I give myself a full body massage with sesame oil.

I have eliminated social stress from my diary and try to minimise my

exposure to electromagnetic fields caused by computers, mobile phones ect.

I still enjoy an alcoholic drink, though I have managed to reduce my

consumption!

Cognitive function is also impaired with CFS. I regained my ability to read

through doing puzzles and word games, then 'pacing' my reading to improve my

concentration. My handwriting has never been legible and is now worse, but

I managed to pace myself to hand-write a book on a social history subject

that interested me, which took three years. You learn to take things

slowly, but not stop, with CFS!

Overall, my practice seems to help to smooth out spikes of fatigue and

support the immune system in fighting opportunist infections (colds,

viruses), however I have not eliminated the symptoms, though I am better

than I was 5 years ago - 70% most days compared to 10-30% when I first

crashed.

In conclusion, I would appreciate any comments on my researches/experience

so far from the group, particularly relating to ayurvedic practice that are

similar to my present routines or ayurvedic teas/herbs I could grow/make

that have been used to relieve fatigue or provide supplemental vitamins and

minerals.

In Light and Laughter
