Guest guest
In Ayurveda herbs are often mixed with each other to obtain more potent drug or kill undesirable toxicity of one herb. Similarly, medicine is taken with special foods such as buttermilk, milk, ghee, honey etc to enchance the action of medicine. The bio-availability of the medicine increases when taken with these substances, ayurveda calls them `yogavahi'. Cow urine distillate is one such substance. Several websites and posts in this column recommend not to take milk, especially if it is produced as industrial product. Use of hormone injections to cows in order to get more milk, pasturisation, additives or preservatives are some cases where milk becomes processed or industrial product. While milk is assumed to cause more mucous, this quality can be suppressed by boiling it with ginger powder, turmeric, black peeper etc. (Message 4917) And then instead of causing mucous, it dissolves the mucous so that body can eliminate it easily. Author remembers taking boiled milk with turmeric added, in addition to a little ghee and a speck of sea salt when suffering from chest congestion. Milk and salt are incompatible, but when taken this way, they become effective medicine. Asthma patients are urged to try this when they are suffering. Milk with ginger powder is a best medicine in arthritis and sciatica as mentioned in a old post by this author. Milk contributes to reduction of Pitta vitiation and is well known to aid the fertility (Message# 5129). Milk, being sweet, adds to Kapha production and strengthens Kapha organs(Message 5067). Milk, being higher dhatu of animals, aids fertility, since ayurveda believes that all germs, eggs, sperms are produced better and stronger if Kapha environment exists. Medicines for mental problems or those which reduce stress (Aswagandha, Satawari, Vidarikand, Brahmi, Kapikachu etc) are invariably taken with milk. Trytophan, Seretonin generation, dopamine balance may be causing these benefits. Ayurveda mentions several milk decoction medicines (Ksheerpaks), wherein milk is boiled with medicine powder and approximately 4 times water, till water evaporates completely. (Message 5080). A special medicine for Post- menopausal women is mentioned in Message 4959, where Saffron is added as balya herb. Todd feels that boiling in milk adds proteins to medicine dose, which limits the amount of toxic product dose crossing blood-brain-barrier. (Message 4953). The assistance of Cow milk in getting off addiction is mentioned in Message 4719, while its effectiveness in combating acid reflux is mentioned in message 4596. The effect of cow milk on a baby is mentioned by her mother, who also happens to be a qualified ayurvedic doctor (Message 4735). These are only few glimpses in the application of milk in healing. This author has recommended milk, milk with dates etc in this column as a tonic, for children and in mental diseases, especially insomnia, bipolar disorder etc. The above is a summary of milk related discussion in 2005 only. If you visit archieves many more messages will be found. The purpose of this post is to bring out the uses of supermilk, i.e colostrums. Colostrum is the first milk produced by a mammal for the first 24 to 96 hours in the postpartum period. It is unfortunate that a baby delivered by C-section misses the initial Colostrum diet due to modern practice of medicine. Colostrum has been a staple in the human diet ever since humans first domesticated hoofed mammals. Colostrum belongs to a class of foods that may provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition by containing biologically active components to impart health benefits. Interest in this class of foods has increased due to rapid advances in science and technology, medicine costs and an aging population.(1) Fruits, vegetables, Omega-3 fatty acids, fibre also come under this category, but none compares with colostrums when nutrition and health benefits are concerned. Colostrum is responsible for strengthening the immune system and protecting against disease.(2) As a result, the nutritional property of colostrums is almost incomparable. Of particular interest are colostrum's anti-bacteria and anti-viral properties along with its ability to improve digestive health. Colostrum can help protect against a number of harmful bacteria, including E. Coli,(3) H. Pylori (ulcers),(4) clostridium difficile, (5) and shigella flexneri.(6) Colostrum also helps provide ant-virus protection against rotavirus,(7) the most common cause of severe diarrhea in children.(8) Finally, research has found that colostrums may improve dental health by killing the bacteria and fungi responsible for cavities.(9) So children are completely protected aginst most of the diseases. The way that colostrum is able to bestow all of these health benefits is because its main site of action is the digestive tract. Colostrum is loaded with probiotics , the "good" bacteria that live in our intestines and protect us against disease.(10) The color of the colostrums is golden yellowish, which retains in all its preparations. This typical color comes from Aurium Hydroxide, a gold compound. The Indian cow, when it grazes in hot sun, this compound secretes in her milk, even if she is not in immediate post-partum period. There are special nerves running in her spine, which are responsible for this. Thus in Indian cow, we have a permanent source of colostrum. If one wishes to compare buffalo with cow, just observe what their babies do after birth. While Cow baby gets up and starts sucking milk in half an hour after birth, buffalo baby takes four days to stand up on all fours. Similarly, goat baby starts sucking milk in half an hour after birth. These kind of observations, not laboratory numbers made Indian ayurveda acceptable to all humanity. Now that world is slowly recognizing the benefit of Cows, and Indian cow in particular, the slaughter mumbers of cows and their industrial farming may reduce, the author hopes. Exceptional taste of beef may be attracting slaughter houses, but retaining cow for her urine and cowdung as input for natural manure is proving more economic, as many farmers in Karnataka, India, near coffee estates in Coorg area have found. Guest guest
Dear Dr Bhate, Namaste.Thank you for this wonderful post. How I wish we had not thrown overboard conventional wisdom which gives us such gems as these. I think I can point out another reason for milk intolerance. Today due to the flouting of natural laws, the human body is adopting a peculiar stance whereby it is not able to tolerate healthy food. On the other hand the taste for non healthy food is increasing by leaps and bounds. It is as if the body is going into a self destruction mode. Today it is very common for children to throw up milk or milk derived products. Even adults are exhibiting this symptom. However the very same people are drawn towards fast food even if they are not able to digest it and their doctor warns them against it. All this is a reason for great concern, especially to traditional healers, as this indicates a fault which has very far reaching consequences. In Homeopathy Hahnemann lists milk intolerance as a prime symptom of "psora" (derived from non-natural thinking and way of life). Guest guest
- Colostrum has become well known in health food stores world wide, and sports athletes(with Americans leading in consumption). I have been trying to get Colostrum for my stomach problems Candida induced. Milk intolerance could be caused by commercial milk where over use of hormones and antibiotics can cause problems, even problems of Candida overgrowth; I could not partake of milk, with no history of intolerance until I was had bad overgrowth of Candida(age 26),and still have a bit of problems with milk and try not to drink it. Lactose intolerance form milk is much more common in non-caucasian asians, and people of african heritage. Not sure why. -- In ayurveda, "jagchat01" <jagchat01> wrote: > I think I can point out another reason for milk intolerance. Guest guest
The advice not drink pasteurized milk,I want to ask about drinking raw milk. Pastuerisation was initially done to kill tuberculosis and brucellis in the milk of cows and goats.Does raw milk have to be boiled at all,to be safe from these kind of pathogens?
