Ayurveda Alarm: Not Justified

Tuesday November 22 2005 19:03 IST Your main edition report on our

ex-president late KR Narayanan (Herbal remedy - that proved malady for KRN, dt

Nov 3) has given rise to many querries. The issue, mainly dwelling on the

'doubts' of a group of attending doctors, has been blown out of proportion. It

also raises many questions.

KRN was a staunch believer of ayurveda and had been taking ayurvedic medicines

throughout his life. Will such a person take an adultrated medicine?

Some ayurvedic medicines do contain some metals in oxide form. They undergo

extensive purification and if given in prescrised dose, will not cause any

side-effects. That's why Dept of Ayush (a legislative body of Government), gives

license to manufacture them. Ayurveda medicines maily depend on plant source and

plants absorb metals from the earth which are therapeutically significant but in

the meantime not harmful. Plants also contain photochemicals and phytosteroids.

Medicinal herbs are effective on diseases because of these constituents. Even

fruits and vegetables contain heavy metals in traces. Sudden failure of any

human system due to ayurvedic medicine has never been reported.

It is common knowledge that overdose of allopathic medicines such as steroids,

antibiotics leads to kidney damage, immune-deficiency and toxicity of many other

bodily cells. Why are deaths due to these reasons not investigated? If by

mistake KRN had consumed such medicines, which are not manufactured with GMP,

then blame it on the particular medicine and ban it or cancel the license issued

to manufacturer or the doctor involved instead of publishing a front page

article based on doubts of an attending doctor. Decades of efforts in reviving

ayurveda has just started bearing fruits. Let us safeguard its interest as it is

our own system of medicine.
