There are primarily 2 causes of Eneuresis in children ----

a) Primary---where we do not know the exact cause and exists from birth

and b) Secondary---where there was no eneuresis in the beginning, but has

developed as a new symptom.

Regarding Primary cause---it can last in children upto 6 years of age. One

should handle the child and the situation with gentleness and a lot of

understanding. It may be a simple case of immaturity of the sphicter mechanism,

which relaxes after sleep, resulting in release of urine, or non-development of

the muscles necessary to produce the sphincter mechanism. It may also be from

some other non-development of urinary organs like the urethra. It may perhaps be

from excessive water intake just prior to going to bed. A good Pediatrician

would be able to examine or refer to a good Urologist to see the exact nature of

the problem.

Regarding the Secondary cause, it depends on the age. In children, it may be be

from stress ( of whatever nature) or from infection. Infection of the urinary

system should be ruled out, because it is treatable, and also because it can get

worse, if left untreated. At older ages, this sign is more ominous, if one did

not have eneuresis before.

The recommendation to give less water may sound appealing, but one does need

water in general. The recommendation to ask the child to go to the bathroom ,

before sleeping is more productive. Also, all the gentleness one can give with a

lot of empathy will relieve any stress, that the child may be facing.
