Guest guest
I looked around the net for a good site to explain the locks. One of these sites does a fair job. I am sure there are better sites but could not find any. Here is my explanation: Root lock: pull the anal sphincter tight, pull that up and squeeze it up towards the sex organ. It is like holding back a bowel movement if one has to go to the toilet. Diaphragm lock: pull the naval in towards the spine and up towards the diaphragm. It is almost as if a vacuum cleaner is pulling the diaphragm up into the rib cage. This should be relaxed and not forced. Neck lock: pull the chin straight back towards the spine. The chin does not go down to the chest but straight back so it resides in the notch in the top of chest. It is as if a soldier would hold his neck at attention. Maha bandh: (great lock)thes combines all three locks at one time. This draws the energy up the spine so that the kundalini has to raise. If you is in a sitting posture then the spine should be straight. Sometimes the locks are used during an exercise and the spine should be as straight as possible considering the exercise. Kundalini means "the coil of the hair of the beloved" That is why the yogis and rishis coiled their hair on the top of their head to form a sort of electromagnet. It helps channel the energy through the top of the head at the 10th gate(where the baby has a soft spot). (We have nine holes in our body. The 10th hole at the top of the head closes when we are young.) The kundalini resides at the base of the spine. When breathing the breath should be balandced with the pingala (right channel(nostril)) and the ida ((left channel)nostril)The ida and pingala meet the kundalini at the 4th vertebrae. This is because the root lock forces the energy up to this area. When they meet, it creates a heat. the energy raises through the chakras because the locks force the energy up the spine. (In Gopi Krishnas case the energy got diverted because he did not have the technology to pull the energy up through all the chakras.) Depending on the circumstances, the energy should usually go out the body through the 3rd eye or the 10th gate. It is similiar to what an oil derrick does. Sometimes they have to put water into the ground (in yoga, we put the prana into our lungs) Since oil (ojas)is lighter than water, the oil is forced up through the derrick(chakras) GB Khalsa
