Guest guest
Dear Friends, It is not that one has access to kundalini powers only when one attempts Kundalini Yoga (KY). The KY techniques are for speeding up the process. The method is tantric in origin. "At the centre of its philosophy is the principle of awakening the vital energy (Kundalini) that lies latent in each of us in order to channel it into spirital growth. Visualized as a coiled serpent, the energy must be aroused through meditation. It then rises up through the energy centre (chakras) to unite with pure consciousness at the crown of the head." A good book on the subject is "Kundalini: The Arousal of the Inner Energy by Ajit Mookerjee. I am yet to locate this book however. Any kind of initiation (Shaktipat or not) has the effect of arousing the kundalini. The Guru Mantra that is practiced regularly with concentration subtly stokes the kundalini and causes it to stir. A gradual arousal, as one tries to eliminate the unwanted tendencies within him, happens to all spiritual aspirants. The kundalini has within itself the bundle of karma or samskaras carried over from previous births. The spiritual obstacles one faces on the path are mainly due to the opening of this bundle that releases the samskaras, some good, some bad. The good samskaras strengthen ones resolve while the bad aspects are to be dealt with by chanting the mantra, remembering ones Guru or Ishta and by restraint. The kundalini is universal to all and not limited to only Hindu aspirants. All spiritual aspirants, regardless of their religion have to face this energy. Many religions cite the kundalini arousal to discredit Hinduism but this is baseless. If we observe the mystics of all religions we can easily see the similiarities. Whereas other religions have described it as the fight against evil, bearing The Cross etc. , the Hindus have sought to understand the process and thus identified the movement with Hinduism. They have also evolved techniques to speed up the process. As GB Khalsaji accurately points out, in many cases the arousal is unwitting and spontaneous. As the condition is not medically understood and thus identified as schizophrenia many of these aspirants end up in mental hospitals. Ayurveda however recognises the symptoms and classifies them as daivaja roga or Godly disease. In the life of Sri Ramakrishna we see an ayurved coming to his aid as he suffers the effects of kundalini arousal. Many other personalities around him at different periods took recourse to ayurvedic principles to ease his discomfiture. If one goes through the detailed life story of Sri Ramakrishna one comes across many such instances. Some of the ayurvedic methods used in his case were; 1. Annointing the body with Chandan (sandalwood). 2. Garlanding with fragnant flowers. 3. Burning of medicated incence. 4. Chanting of specific mantras. 5. Leaving him alone in a room filled with eatables (when he developed unnatural hunger). 6. In one case a curse that he would vomit blood actually helped him vomit blood that had congealed in his brain as a result of intense spiritual exercises. This is an instance of how Providence guards an aspirant. It may appear a cruel quirk to many that people on the spiritual path should suffer so much. It also shocks many when they see people well entrenched on the path suddenly go astray. No wonder the path is known as the "rajors edge". The presence of an enlightened Guru and a good ayurved is a blessing for the spiritual aspirant. One should also personally acquire some knowledge. Sri Ramakrishna himself used to instruct his attendants as to the remedies when certain symptoms appeared in him while in a trance. We would love to learn more about how the condition is helped using ayurveda. Meanwhile I have gathered the following symptoms of kundalini arousal that I have gleaned from the net. I am not giving the link because the accompanying article would hurt the religious sentiments of many on this group. Regards, Jagannath. TYPICAL KUNDALINI SYMPTOMS: *Burning hot or ice cold streams moving up the spine. *Perhaps a feeling of air bubbles or snake movement up through the body. *Pains in varying locations throughout the body. *Titillation of the genital area, spine, or head. *Tension or stiffness of neck, and headaches. *Feeling of overpreassure within the head. *Vibrations, unease, or cramps in legs and other parts of the body. *Fast pulse and increased metabolism. *Disturbance in the breathing- and/or heartfunction. *Sensitivity to sound, light, smell, and proximity of other people. *Orgasm sensations different places in the body, or total cosmic orgasms. *Mystical/religious experiences, revelations, and/or cosmic glimpses. *Parapsychological abilities. Light phenomena in or outside the body. *Problems with finding balance between strong sexual urges, and a wish to live in sublime purity. *Persistent anxiety or anxiety attacks, due to lack of understanding of what is going on. *Insomnia, manic high spirits or deep depression. Energy loss. *Impaired concentration and memory. *Total isolation due to inability to communicate inner experiences out. Note! Of course one can have some of these symptoms without having a kundalini arousal!
