Guest guest
Nowadays, back pain is a very common complaint a patient voices out. While back pain was a speciality of menstruating ladies in old days, now a days, all suffer. Of course ladies have their specific reasons of back pain, which occur typically before start of menstrual period, during period, during ovulation (rare), during third trimester of pregnancy, after pregnancy due to adjustment of the system. In this post, author will discuss about the reasons and treatments for back pain, common to both seses. Faults in the structure of vertebrae, arising out of mineral deficiency, faulty diet, etc show up in pains in cervical, thoraic and lumber regions also. But maximum patients experience pains in lumber region, as this is the region which carries the weight of entire upper body. Lumber vertebrae, the discs between them weaken due to the tensions and strains/shocks on cells and ligaments around these discs. The problems get accentuated by body weight, in case of obese patients. The coolies and labourers who carry heavy weights on head, shoulders who are subjected to more laod, pressure in lumber region, suffer more from this ailment. Even computer data entry operators, software experts who are offered revolving but inadequate back support chairs have started suffering. If Monior is not at convenient height, cervical sponiloytis is encountered. Other reasons: Swelling in Vertebrae Displacement/misalignment in vertebrae Reduced density of vertebrae, due to which they loose their stiffness, become spongy (osteoporosis is the modern science term) The cavitation in vertebrae Slip-disc: the cartilage mislignment with vertebrae, their displacement Vetebrae T.B. or Cancer Back pain is sometimes indicator of swelling of pancreas, ulcer, cancer of digestive organs. During childbirth or other surgery of organs in pelvis, if instead of general ansthesia, local spinal epidurals are given, some people suffer by back pain for a long time. They tend to have pains at the same spot, during winter or monsoon days. When sciatica nerve gets pressed in vertebrae as a result of mislignment or slip-disc, the back pain is present in addition to pains all along sciatica nerve, upto heel. Back pain can also be due to rheumatism, wherein, the ama (undigested food along with toxins generated therefrom) deposits on nerves in vertebrae. If there is no structural defect in spine, the constipation is a major cause of back-pain. The accumulation of waste matter (fecal mater) in the crevices of large intestine causes generation of toxins (termed ama in ayurveda), which when circulate in blood, cause back pain. If elimination is improved and colon cleared, back pain reduces and vanishes in many cases. Vaidyas should first investigate this possibility, as this is easiest way to eliminate one possible cause. When a person looses dhatus, the space created by dhatus is taken by Vata. The weakness which results due to loss of dhatus, causes vitiation of vata, which shows up its presence in back pain. Loss of blood in menstruation, and inadequate rest due to modern lifestyle is one exmple, which causes Vata unbalance. Similar to swellings, back pain is not a special disease, but it is a symptom, pointing to many reasons. Taking a pain killer may give temporary relief, but does not eliminate the root of the problem. Hence after some time, the pain will return. Let us see some ayurvedic approaches which can hit the root of the problem. Cow-urine distillates: This author has provided the information on Panch Gayma medicines in various earlier posts. The mixture of cow urine and castor oil was proposed as one very effective remedy for sciaatiaca pain. For spinal pains, especially in lumber region, massage for a few minutes in painful regions by cow urine distillate provides immediate relief. Distillate has sharp penetrating power. It provides relief for one or two days, almost equivalent to steroidal pain killers, without their side effects. The cow urine as well as human urine having micro- steroids was brought in earlier posts. The distillate can be applied even three to four times during a day, if acute pain exists. Cow urine distillate is available in almost all towns in North India, Maharashtra, Gujarat. Thanks to Aasaram Bapu, Ramdev Maharaj and several prominent Vaidyas who are proposing these medicines. When sciatica nerve pains, pain exists in knees or ligaments, heel pains, in all these cases mixture of cow urine distillate and castor oil in the ratio 2:1 can be taken empty stomach early morning. The quantity to start with should be 10 ml distillate and 5 ml castor oil. Gradually increase tio double the dose. Only one dose per day generally suffices. If fresh cow urine is available, start with 5 ml only (after starining it with muslin cloth) and reach 10-15 ml in a month's time. Cow happens to be at root of several remedies in ayurveda. Thus several herbs are boiled with butter, or mixed with milk when making curd. The resulting ghee (ghrutam as termed in ayurveda) imbibes the medical qualities of herbs, and such a ghee assumes high penetration power, as medicine now exists in micro form. Ghrutam therapy is highly used by Vaidyas to treat problems of glands and central nervous system (Vatic problems). In case of back pain, Panchtikta Ghrutam, Shatawari Ghrutam, Khadir Ghrutam are used depending on individual doshas. When using Ghrutams, remember that time period can range from six months to a year, depending on how long the pains exist and how serious the problem. But since the Ghrutams reach the nerves, the cure is slow but sure. When reason for back pain is traced to loss of dhatus, dhatu builder medicines such as Amalki Rasyana, Rasayan Churna, Chandraprabha Vati, Shilajit Rasayan, Chyavan Prasha can be suggested depending on the season of the year, patients capacity (both constitution, strength and financial, since some medicines in this range are expensive). Rasyana means the medicine or agent which helps making `Rasa" and causes its `ayana' means `Vahana' or 'transport' to cells. When taking such medicines, which have added agents such as `Makardhwaj', `Saffron', Gold, etc take them under supervison of an experienced person. Shilajit Rasayana, or Jivit Pradavati is another name, is a widely used formulation. It is made by adding Guggulu, Shilajit and Giloy (Amruta) herb. This cleans the microchannels (Strotas) so that cells build up efficiently. It takes care of Urin Tract Infection, Prostate enlargement, reduces pressure on sciatica nerve, helps in swellin in and around vertebrae, sponilytis, removes ama deposits from spinal nerves. Helps in balancing vitiated vata (rheumatism). Take two tablets with warm water or milk, three times a day. Several more specific formulations are listed in Yogarantnakara, Shargandhar Sanhita, Bharat Bhaisyaja Ratnakar etc. Even before using any medicine, Panch Karma or detoxification approach of ayurveda can be explored. Ayurveda can certainly improve quality of life. For proper diagnosis and lifestyle modification/purification/medicine approach, consulting nearest ayurvedist is the best recommendation that can be given at the end of this post. Guest guest
Dr Bhate The cow is regarded as a very sacred animal in India. This is both for its nature as well as utility. I am also aware of the need for preserving energy. I wish to narrate a personal experience here. My Guruji wanted me to remain a celibate but the passions were too strong for me for I was hardly out of my teens at that time. I requested him for permission to marry. He willingly agreed while telling me that I would soon meet a lady who would not be too much of a bother for me. Surely enough I met Dory who is a RN. Her duties take her away from town most of the time but we both are very happy and have more time for understanding each other and adjusting accordingly. I have realised that control is the key to a meaningful life. Thank you for the message. Does osteoporosis also have a link to what you have written? Bob.
