Dear Ayurvedaonline readers :

It has been over an year since my husband has been off

medication for severe depression due to Bipolar

syndrome. This was possible due to the advice and

recommendations we received from this group.

As you may imagine, it is not an happy situation to be

under the influence of a daily cycle of 4-5 allopathic

medications : one med to get you to sleep, another to

wake you up and make you alert, a third to fight

depression, yet another to prevent you from mood

cycles during the day ; plus the expense of a $100 of

co-pay each month; and the difficult prospect of

guessing the 'mood' of my spouse.

My husband is a keen scientist and quite a

reductionist in his way of thought and believed

strongly in western medicine. It was quite a leap of

faith for him to agree to this but he accepted your

suggestions of separating the allopathic medication

from the ayurvedic medicines by an hour and reduce the

allopathic medication only if he was comfortable with

it. He now as a "good rationale" of why ayurveda can

be effective inspite of not having "one cure" for each

disease or having different cures for the same ailment

from different practioners.

The 'appropriate' use of tulsi tea and godanti, not

only to wean away from the allopathic medications but

also to restore the mental and physical health of my

husband worked like a charm.

The psychiatrist, who had previously treated my

husband for over 4 years, was skeptical yet open to

talking to us of the progress my husband made over the

last year. The psychiatrist was happy to pronounce my

husband to be in good health and remains a good

friend. We have given him various references such as

H.S.Puri and V. Lad and some excerpts from various

posts of Dr. Bhate from the ayurveda .

I am writing now as my husband has completed a year

free from allopathic medications and without any

relapse. His thinking is lucid and unhurried and he

says, he is concentrating better than ever in his

life.

We have now began with suryayoga, viz. sun gazing

early morning with 10 second increments after

listening to Hira Ratan Manek's description of it

which he has written in http://www.solarhealing.com

as well. We are now going to spiritual healing

classes (taught free!) as well. (will post more about

suryayoga

later)

Again, please accept our thanks and gratitude to the

ayurveda group and Dr. Bhate for guidance in

restoration of my husband's health.

I implore the experts here, Dr. Bhate, Dr. Venugopal,

Dr. Vidyasagar, and others I am forgetting, to

continue posting the simpler treatment methodologies

using herbs etc. available easily . I am sure there

are many like us, who are not vocal in the group, yet

follow the advice we receive. I speak for all such

people. A humble request to Jagannath Chatterjee to

continue your crusade for ayurveda, alternative

healing therapies with more vigour and energy.

Sincerely,

Sarika

Thank you for the link to suryayoga. The American Indians believe that the Sun

protects us from all diseases. In India the Gayatri Mantra is prescribed as a

means to both enlightenment and good health. I have slight reservation about

gazing directly at the Sun, maybe because western education still lurks within

me. I hope you will talk on that when you reveal more about suryayoga. I have

heard of another such yogi who lives in south India.
