Jagganath,

The FDA in the US has not banned herbal products or

supplements and selling these over the counter. CODEX

was passed as part of the CAFTA (Central American Free

Trade ACT) This means that world trade organizations

may pressure the US into certain standards. So far

this has not happened. A law passed in the early 90's

still reigns. There is a difference between a law

being passed and the way it is executed. The American

public would be very upset if these products would not

be sold over the counter. On the other hand, The Bush

Administration is in charge of implementing laws. I

realized the implication of Bush's statement when he

said "Either you are with us or you are with the

terrorists." I thought "No, he would be insane to

invade Iraq, but look what happened. Also, most of

the environmental laws have been weakened since Bush

is in office. I hope he has enough sanity to keep the

supplements sold over the counter.

Sir — Herbal medicine being a huge success the world

over, the drug

industry’s concern over ayurveda is understandable.

The American FDA has

banned herbal products from being sold over the

counter and the Indian

drugs industry is itching to follow. If this does come

about, then

millions of Indians will be deprived of an effective

alternative to

allopathy.
