Guest guest
In a recent message (#4632), we saw how ayurveda (like astrology) is scattered over a number of ancient books. Traditional knowledge, going by oral communication from one generation to next, is not restricted to just few standard texts being referred to or taught in universities. Last paragraph by Todd in a message #4664 speaks a lot on how ayurveda may have been born. Even today, some tribal remedies have no mention in ancient texts. Today we take up a simple remedy given in Garud Purana for people suffering from asthma and respiratory problems. Ginger is commonly available every where and Bharangi is a herb well known in Ayurvedic tradition for this. Deepan guna of ginger causes increased secretion of digestive enzymes. The combination of these two herbs digests undigested AMA and Kapha dosha. They are expelled to leave the body through suitable exits. With partial blockage of respiratory channels getting removed thus, the breathing improves. Now the comments by author: This medicine needs to be taken for at least six months, half tsp morning and half tsp in evening. This is not individualized approach. May not work for some. When works, continue till at least 18 months, before discontinuing. Those with science mindset or who can obtain fresh Bharangi leaves or wish to know phyto-chemistry can visit: http://www.dabur.com/en/ayurveda/herbalGarden/details.asp? herbName=Bharangi http://www.mypurohith.com/Ayurveda/Medicine4.asp Dr Bhate
Guest guest
Dear Dr Bhate, Namaskar. In the National Geographic programme I wrote about recently various palm leaf and copper manuscripts on ayurveda were shown to be in possession of village vaidyas and many families who had adopted ayurveda as a profession. It was briefly mentioned that as these manuscripts were written in Sanskrit it was difficult to translate them. But as far as I know the owners of these manuscripts do not want the contents of the manuscripts to be revealed, for various reasons not always monetary. For example the fish cure treatment in Hyderabad is reputed to be of daivic origin and would work only with the participation of members of the family. The village vaidya who cured a girl from the effects of a snakebite displayed a manuscript said to deal with all forms of vish kriya (poisons and their treatment). If only we could get hold of those manuscripts !! I think the Govt or societies of ayurvedic physicians should try and recover the knowledge of the manuscripts before they are lost or destroyed. It would be a disaster if such a depository of knowledge was lost to posterity. I also feel that all vaidyas keep a record of their own personal experiences, however unscientific it may seem. This would be a significant addition to ayurveda and would help both students as well as other vaidyas.
