Dear Dr Phadke

Thanks for your compliments for the members who communicate to the

group often. Hope you will give us an opportunity to include your

name also in that list. Your suggestions to improve the group also

require deep thinking. During this thinking some new issues surfaced,

which should be thought over by all. Please offer your comments also.

As modern science has given us all gadgets like PC, cell phone,

internet, we can modernise all the ayurvedic diagnosis process in the

same spirit. But can a modern ayurvedist ask a slum dweller to undergo a MRI, if

he

cant afford it? Have you visited villages and seen the dire powerty

of our countrymen? Should they be banned from the benifits of Modern

Ayurveda which insists on X-rays, scans, blood markers etc. And how

can we subject a person to side effects of these techniques?

Ayurveda, as documented by acharyas, was perhaps epitome of common

sense, meditation and consensus understanding of various acharyas.

Excepting looking at patient's body, skin, urine and stool, they did

not want any other test. It did not matter whether you know the name

of the disease or not. If your knowledge suggests whether disease is

curable, controllable or incurable, tell patient accordingly. What kind of

modernised technique Ramdev Maharaj uses? One fried of this author (who is a

modern science practitioner) obtained significant benifits by following Ramdev

Maharaj techniques for his own health problems. And now he adds those to his

prescriptions!

Today, modern science has an array of names of diseases, but neither

knows their origin cause nor effective cure for the same. It is

lamentable that on ayurveda forum we still have to use modern science

terms rather than original ayurvedic terms. We need to look into the

reasons why we are forgetting rich heritage of words devised by

acharyas. B.P. was known to ayurveda, but it was termed as a special "pulse"

state.

Today, due to advent of computers and radiation equipment we subject

patient to never ending scans of all kinds and produce new disease.

Ayurveda mentions equivalent of cancer and AIDS also. What kind of

scan they would have used to discover these diseases and

corresponding remedies, remains a research area.

First Surgery in the world was done in India 2700 years ago, and

equivalent of C-section was also practiced. Then why these topics do

not fall in ayurveda is something this author does not understand.

All of us owe our existence to child birth. That is where

consideration of health of us and mother starts. Though ayurveda

mentions several herbs for healthy pregnancy or even abortion, how

many such herbs are currently being used? Perhaps people need to be

blamed who got dragged to shine of modern science ignoring simplicity

of ayurveda. When the topic of C-section etc was being debated here,

several personal mails recd by this author indicated what is

happening world over. Patients are afraid to criticise the system in

an open forum like this. But they air out their sufferings privately.

After all, grief halves when communicated.

When an ayurvedist starts prescribing statin medication, on the other

hand, he is deviating out from ayurveda. And as you rightly point out

such a medication should not be prescribed over the net. But whether

statin is necessary or not is a question Todd can answer better. Our

aim in discussing some pitfalls of modern science is to caution some

modern ayurvedists, who for fast results, may be tempted to use such

medications. Doctor, this author has seen that almost 70% ayurvedic

doctors were practicing allopathy twenty years ago. Today of course

they have changed the flag.

Public health system in India cant afford western or modernised ayurvedic model.

This model could serve income tax payers or evaders. In villages, you can find

only an ayurvedist to attend to people. Now even Mumbai Corporation and several

hospitals are on the way to introduce traditional ayurvedic system in public

dispensaries. 80% indian population is in villages, producing food for remaining

20% staying in cities and metros.

Despite your busy schedule and being a moderator for another group,

this author request you to become an active member like other names

you mentioned. With your specialized knowledge and philosophy to preserve

ayurvdic essense, this group will certainly benifit. We have been eagerly

waiting your contributions for a long time!

Warm regards

Dr Bhate

Dear Dr.Bhate,

Thanks for replying on my mail. Well I don't have anything to say on

overusage or misuse of technology ! But do u mean to say Ayurvedic

doctors need not use these techniques? Yes I am aware of poverty , I

also agree that many of them can not afford the cost of

investigations, but pl. remember there are several charitable org./

Govt. hosp. where we can get these tests done, many a times free or

in a very reduced price. Whenever it is not required we can go ahead

with our clinical accumen of Ayurvedic Nidana! I need of comment on

any one who is per say not University qualified in Ayurveda & have

tall claims saying have this Nuksa & your diseases will be Khatam !!

That is NOT the AYURVEDIC APPROACH !! Any way .....! Thats the

entirely different issue & can not be considered here for discussion

at least with my answer !

Yes, I fully agree that Ayurveda do have a branch of Shalya tantra,

Shalaklya tantra & Stree Roga Prasooti Tantra where one can observe

the ref. of Surgical procedures including C.S., but I don't think we

have tried to compare the Surgical approach of Sushruta of

Vamadeveeya prasava vis a vis to modern approach ! Yes that would

have been more closer to the theme of Ayuerveda.

Let me say that I have worked in a Municiple Hosp. as an Ayurvedic

Consultant for about 8 to 10 yrs as Hon. also in a teaching

institute !

You have rightly stated that Statins should not be prescribed

online ,correct, but why even Ayurvedic Drugs ? Do you know if these

drugs (Ayurvedic herbomineral combinations) if taken for pretty long

period ,in a wong dose ( not just dose mentioned on label claim,

since it may vary with ref. to Rugna -Patient to patient , stages to

stages of the disease, Purusham Purusham Veekshyam ....)then even

that can be found out to be troublesome ! Then there are certain

adverse effects observed by other pathy doctors blame comes on

Ayurveda !!

So for simple cases , common ailments simple home remedies if shared

that is ok but to tell all classical drugs which requires great

efforts to examine case & then to arrive at prescription will be an

appropriate thing. Now what happens some one asks I am Pitta++ Vata+

having this problems pl. help, now who knows what is the reality at

his end ? Being a patient he might have felt these readings , but

will it be appropriate to do this ...????

To adv. on diet, yes, that is really a good support.we should

continue that, of course keeping principles of Ayurvedic Dietetics in

mind & not alone with the frame of Caloric theory of contemporory

sciences.

Our Acharya Charak has stated at one place -

"Na hi sarva vikaranam namato asti dhruva sthiti !"

A vaidya need not run after naming a diseased condition, he should

acess the levels of Dosha, Dooshya etc & then treat the condition

accordingly. So what I feel there is a need to be really unbiased of

being an Ayurvedic , Homeopathic or Allopathic Physician & need to

balanced without any personal egos, & need to read between the lines

of ancient texts in the light of contemporary sciences again without

leaving our core principles.

I think I have tried to put forth my views. Thanks once again to all &

especially to Dr.Bhate for motivating me to write this mail.

With warm regards,
