Indian doctors gear up to fight corrupt medicos.

A series of scandals in the medical fraternity in India, which has affected even

the immediate families of doctors, has now forced many from within the medical

community to come out against many corrupt practices that plague the system.

The corruption takes place at various levels;

 

1. Government doctors and medical staff charging patients for free

treatments/surgery.

2. Unnecessary expensive medical investigations being prescribed to earn

commissions.

3. Wilful shut down of clinical facilities in Govt hospitals forcing patients to

go to private

clinics for various investigative procedures.

4. Sale of medicines from Govt hospitals, which are originally intended to be

distributed

free to patients.

5. In private hospitals doctors are instructed to go in for operations and

investigative tests

as the surgery departments and the investigative departments are the profit

centres of

the private hospitals and bring in the better part of the earnings.

6. Govt doctors encouraging patients to visit their private clinics.

7. Govt doctors carrying on private practice giving outdoor slips to their

private patients

to avail free facilities at Govt hospitals.

8. Govt doctors not attending rural clinics where they have been posted.

9. Prescribing drugs of drug majors from whom the doctors get good commissions.

10. Refusing treatment to poor patients.

11. Not attending to patients out of sheer arrogance.

12. Not informing patients of the side effects of the drugs they are

prescribing.

13. Not educating patients about the after effects of the surgery prescribed.

14. Not keeping abreast of latest trends in medicine preferring instead to rely

on information

provided by medical representatives.

15. Accepting, even demanding, costly gifts from medical representatives.

16. Unnecessarily retaining patients who cannot be benefitted by modern medicine

instead of referring them to other systems of medicine where they may be

better treated.

17. Refusal to listen to the patient's personal accounts of the illness and

prescribing drugs based on clinical investigation alone.

18. Prescribing drugs knowing fully well that they have been banned in the

developed

countries.

19. Faking experience certificates, and in some cases, even medical degrees.

20. Worrying more about their careers and income than the troubles of their

patients.
