Guest guest
Garlic "Lashuna" when it is to be used medicinally, needs some purification. One of the common method is soaking peeled garlic in sour buttermilk for overnight and dry in shade and used.(or gently fry with little cow ghee before use) it is strongly not recomonded to use as raw. Garlic is one of the pitta provocating drug due to its 'Teekshna and Sara gunas and Higher Ushna veerya. Thus it is contraindicated in pitta prakruti ,pregnancy, rakta vikaras, rakta pitta, raktatisara, Shira shoola And yet it's great a rasayana .and one of the best medicines for vata kapha disorders. There are several preparations available in ayurveda such as "Lashuna ksheera paka, Lashnadi vati. Rasona pinda(Highly effective in Gridrasi,Pakshaghata, Ardita vata, Kati vata..and many more vata kapha disorders) It is up to the descrimination , intellegence(yukti), experience and accurate knowledge of a true ayurvedic physician(who also well of practical knowledge rather than studieng mere theory) when to use, where to use how to use, in whom to use,in which form to use, with which anupana to use it in which dose, etc in order to appriciate its medicinal worth devoid of negetive effects. Bhava mishra recommended to avoid. the following during consumption of Garlic. Madhya (Alcohol or ethnol), Mamsa (Non veg), Amla rasa dravyas (Sour items such as tammarind, citrus fruits etc.,) Vyayama (Excessive physical excersise), Aatapa ( Direct exposure to hot sun shine), Krodha (Anger), Adhika Jala pana (Excessive water in take), Ksheera (Milk) Guda (Jaggery).. Guest guest
Dear Dr Venu Gopal, This is very interesting. Why is garlic not recommended to be taken raw? And why not with meat? Are there any specific details in ayurvedic texts or from famous vaidyas about toxic effects of raw garlic? Many thanks, Ole Alstrup
