Guest guest
Dr. Bent Formby, in a book called Sex, Lies, and Menopause points out that anything that damages the inside of arteries will cause plaque to build up. This includes stenting, the cardiac cath, and various other wonderful "plumbing" procedures. The one where they basically drill out the arteries to remove plaque (I forgot what it is called) doesn't bear thinking of. The rest of the book is problematic--it espouses something called the Wiley Protocol (a wild misuse of data by a co-author), which involves giving women extremely high levels of bioidentical hormones in a desperate effort to avoid menopause, avoid cancer, and stay youthful. There is a list called rhythmic living in which several women have persuaded doctors and pharmacists to do this and are now reaping the problems that go along with such extreme behavior (slow thyroids, more cancer, endometrial problems, bad pms, extreme bleeding, etc.). I have serious doubts about any kind of hormone replacement that is not absolutely necessary, because they just do too many functions in the body and many people (including some doctors I know) can't make the connections to say what they will affect since they systems are so complex. Western medicine has real problems with logical connections that are not 1:1. I have noticed when I go to the doctor, if I have more than one main symptom, I have to carefully lay it out and time when I tell her what or she will hear one thing (usually arthritis) and all the rest (sore throat or drug interactions) go ignored. The reason I like ayurveda and TCM is that they can deal with complexity.
