Dear Friends,

Greetings. As citizen of the 21st Century we have always taken pride in deriding

the thought process of our ancestors, "the cave men". However today 21st Century

science is coming to those same conclusions that our stupid and unpractical

ancestors were once so proud of till we received "proper education" and came to

know that ( horror of horrors! ), we had all along been living on superstitions

!

One such concept is the theory that the earth, which our ancestors erroneously

referred to as "Mother Earth" (how foolish and superstitious of them !). They

prayed to mountains, rivers, trees and were afraid of natures fury. They treated

the earth with respect and were of the opinion that her resources, the

atmosphere, biosphere, forests and animals were to be preserved and protected.

They called a river "Mother Ganga", another "Mother Saraswati" and a hilltop in

a remote corner of the world, "the abode of Lord Shiva". Their God Shiva was an

unkempt ascetic who sat in deep meditation and sometimes danced.

Today our scientists seem to have caught the same madness (virus?). They are

referring to the earth as Gaia, "Earth Godess !" and are even declaring that the

cosmic events are like the "dance of Nataraja, the dancing Shiva!". Shiva,

Shiva, what days have come !!

Even the economists prefer to turn to the theory of our illiterate ancestors.

The environmentalists say that the animal kingdom and the naked tribals of the

Andaman Islands are in touch with Gaia. That is what gave them advance warning

of the Tsunami ! How foolish. Just imagine, God preferring the animals and naked

tribals over us, the educated intelligentsia ! Has even God caught the virus ?

Says Economist Thomas Berry, 1991,

We presently face a radical transition in Earth's history. "[W]e have already

terminated the Cenozoic period of the geo-biological systems of the planet. . .

.. A renewal of life in some creative context requires that a new biological

period come into being, a period when humans would dwell upon the Earth in a

mutually enhancing manner." Berry outlines the conditions required for the

emergence of an Ecozoic Era, a time for healing the damage done to Earth and

learning to live in harmony with it again. Drawing on the experience of Native

Americans, he urges renewed understanding of the Great Story: the combined

stories of community, Earth, and universe. Berry calls on Elders of the Tribe to

inspire future generations with this vision, since only with a new myth to

replace the current entrancement with a destructive technology will they "be

able to endure the pains of transformation" sure to come.

Regards,

Jagannath.
