Dear chotawa

One can understand the sentiments of others only when he is

interested in their welfare. If you have a pet dog/cat for a long

time, you can understand their moods and they too understand your moods. How?

there are vibrations which express anger love etc, which your brain emits.

Though meditations, even humans can develop the capabilities to sense these

vibrations. Plants too have feelings,

moods. Like bird watching, plant watching is a hobby one needs to

develop through love for them.

Modern science now has extensive equipment to measure brain waves

through EEG, magnetic waves through MRI, equipment to tell whether

someone is speaking truth. In near future, plant feelings may also

get recorded in computers.

The experiences which make this author believe that plants do have

feelings and sentiments may not get accepted in this group as valid

scientific proof; already we have enough debate going on more serious

issues.

Like bioelectricity and biomagnetism in human body, plants too

conduct electricity. We already know that a fish can cause electric

shock when touched. A coconut tree has been used as a TV antenna by a

scientist about 40 years back. Put a Tulsi plant in house and see how

it responds to the environment in the house. Self experience is the

ultimate knowledge.

Biologists may argue that plants flower during season since they get

sunlight, right temperature etc. But in such a season, you will see

that not only plants but all birds, human beings and animals are in

their happiest mood. Singing by nightingale will start around this

time. Rate of conceptions is maximum in this season (Feb-March).

Beyond physically measurable things such as light, temperature etc.

there is something else which drives universe. Let us all use our

mental faculties to answer such questions, without going into alpha,

beta, gamma rays.

There was an auspicious tree (Name: Audumbar in 'Marathi') in the

compound of apartments where author lived once. It was flowering and

giving fruits every year. One of its branches started entering the

window of neighbour, so it had to be cut mercilessly. There are seven

holy trees in India, this one being one of those. For next four

years, the tree did not bear flowers or fruits. From fifth year, of

course, the flowers and fruits started, albeit in smaller scle. Tree,

almost was crying that it was cut. After many years, the tree exists,

but no growth in the same direction. Can one say it senses enemy in

that direction?

Indian astrological theory assigns one tree to each of birth stars.

Depressed people have obtained benifits by keeping the roots of such

tree (corresponding to their birthstar) in their pockets or taking

decoctions of the bark. Offering prayers to trees have made mind

peaceful. Scientists cannot be offered laboratory proofs for such

beliefs, but then entire ayurveda is like this. Take your own

experience, meditate and obtain enlightenment.

And let us recollect our ayurvedic epidural and pitocin. The roots of

Arka tree, when kept in the hair of laboring woman assist her for

safe delivery. Can we say they emit certain vibrations to ease the

childbirth. This tree is associated with Lord siva again. The god

associated with birth as well as death.

Finally, plant sentiments appear to have been recognised by ancient

sage. Ancient texts mention that before taking the plant parts for

medicine, Vaidya should pray and offer certain mantras so that plant

offers its parts willingly. Similar prayers are also given to animal

to be sacrificed in certain religious procedures advocated by priests

and tantriks. Animal knows beforehand its end (continuous tears in

eyes), though it does not see the executor. How does it sense this?

There is some language, not made with sounds but perhaps sound beyond

audio range. Science may take few years to answer such questions, if

scientists like Jagdish Chandra Bose and saints like the author of

Gitanjali (both Nobel prize winners) drive the directions and

frontiers of science. The answers to such questions may also unravel

the mysteries by which ancient sage would have guessed correct

medicines for diseases.

Dear Dr.Bhate,

What you say is true. About 30- 35 years ago, I read a book entitled "The

Secret Life of Plants" by Christopher ?. It relates the same things you are

talking about. It also mentioned music such as baroque and Indian ragas for

enhancing growth.

Dr. Bhate,

Very illustrative and informative post.

Plants have a spirit, like all living things, but they do not have souls,

of which only humans and animals have.

Not sure if they have feelings, but they do not have a intricate

nervous system,or a brain,eyes,ears,nose,mouth,and the do not have a

mind, which is a requirement for a setinent being
