Guest guest
I am not sure what the Dalai Lama eats. But, Tibetans Buddhists do eat meat, for one good reason; nothing much grows there in terms of edible vegetables. Also, the Chinese believe in eating yin and yang, as much of their philosophy is based on all forms of yin and yang. The Yin being vegetables and yang is the meat. There are very few purely vegetarian chinese dishes, most are combinations of yin and yang, or vegetables and meat. Guest guest
His Holiness eats some beef. As a young man he made a very sincere effort to become a strict vegetarian, but became ill. I'm not sure if he has ever commented on the nature of the problem, but I'm guessing it was anemia. His doctors told him that he had to return to eating meat. I believe that this is an issue that still bothers him. He would undoubtedly prefer to be a vegetarian. I have had the great good fortune to share meals with many Tibetan monks of all ranks, and I would guess that the overwhelming majority do not eat meat, but will have cheese.
