I had an ambulance driver tell me once that the main reason for

teaching CPR to the public is to give the survivors something to do

until the ambulance got there and that in general it was a waste of

time. Television does show all these wonderful miracles of diagnosis

and science, but access to them is the trick. For every miracle, I

wonder how many bad outcomes? I think the medical associations should

put the kibosh on the unrealistic cures we see on TV; it perpetuates

the godlike status of the doctors in those shows and we naturally come

to expect the same thing in real life. For example, there is a show

called House on tv here and Dr. House in the last episode sent his

assistants out to dig up a dead cat which he then autopsied and also

had them to bore holes in the walls of a man's house to prove that his

child was dying of napthalene poisoning from termites. There is no way

in the world that that could happen here, and in time to save the

child. I think the way they would get the answer to that little

mystery in this part of the world is to autopsy the kid after he died.

By the way, it is a really good show as far as entertainment goes.

I just read an article today that supports your assertion re: CPR. Link below.
