Dear Dr Bhate,

I always enjoy your insightful posts. You have delved deep into the spirit of

ayurveda. I fully agree with you that the shaky edifice of modern medicine is

crumbling and the onus is now on the alternative medicine practitioners to rise

up to the occasion and provide the necessary succour to suffering humanity.

My experience with disease and its cure is at a very personal level, having

suffered tremendously in the hands of allopaths for a very long time. I could

have quit long back but my parents and peers were enamoured by "modern science"

..By the time I was adult enough to take my own decisions I was hooked to

addictive drugs. My final decision to quit allopathy, my search for other

alternate methods, and my excruciatingly slow and painful recovery is a very

long story.

Pain management was very essential to my recovery. In the biochemic system of

medicine, the pain killer is usually Magnesia Phos taken in 3x or 6x potency. In

homoeopathy belladona, colocynth, diascorea, berberis vulgaris, aconite, arnica,

hypericum, etc. are the prime painkillers depending on the context but almost

any remedy can be a pain killer if the critical symptoms match.

Reiki, a combined form of spiritual and energy healing, is very good in managing

pain. I was very skeptical about this method but my personal experiences with

it, both as practitioner and patient, have amazed me. Accupressure methods,

mudras, mantras, prayer, meditation techniques, divinations are also very good

at managing pain. I have no experience with accupuncture.

Ayurveda abounds in pain killing techniques, medicines and oils. I am looking

forward to knowing more about them. I have personally used clove oil,

mahanarayan taila, mahamas taila, ajwain arka, on various occasions.

Allopathy concentrates on destroying the symptom of pain by paralysing the nerve

endings so that the pain is no longer felt. It rarely goes to the root of the

cause. However other alternate methods try to ascertain and eradicate the cause

of pain leading to overall improvement in the health and well being of the

patient.

Regards,

Jagannath.
