Guest guest
Esteemed Members, I have a query with regards to Ashwagandha. I'm aware that Himalaya Ayurved company has long come up with an O.T.C. version of this herb which they claim is safe to take without any prescription. Also, on the pack, it mentions the same to be a anti-stress tablet. Before I went ahead with buying the same, I would like to know if it is indeed any anti-stress herb. Would be great if someone can explain me all the effects (good and side) of this herb. Thanks very much Warm regards Bhairvi Raichura
Guest guest
Bhairvi, Your querry has not attracted much attention since the subject of Ashwagandha has been extensively discussed in this forum. A product of Himalayan Healthcare, "Mentat" was also dicussed in message nos. 1188, 1195, 1199. If mental exhaustion is the only issue, you can see message no. 2286 also. Ashwagandha is so much used in ayurveda, that its farming on commercial scale is also undertaken. One reason for this could be compared to ancient days (2 day week) now we have 6 day week with 9-9 work routine in cities. You may buy ashwagandha OTC from Himalayan Healthcare. However, Ashagandha taken alone in summer is not desirable. Ashwagandha as stress reliever, brain tonic and tranquiliser for inducing sleep is recommended to be taken as Ashwagandha Ksheer Pak at bed time. Procedure: 100 ml milk 1 tsp ashwagandha powder, 100 ml water Boil on slow heat till 100 ml remains. Add a little cardamom, sugar and drink warm and go to bed. Procedure described by Dr Rao in a recent post differs slightly from this. Above procedure is also discussed in this author's earlier messages. In ayurveda, undesirable property of a single herb is often balanced by mixing it with another herb, so that both of them work hormoniously, and in bio-enhanced way. This latter property is termed Yogvahaka. Hence many herbs are taken with milk, buttermilk, ghee, honey etc. ON this principle, If you have no time for making this Ksheerpak, on a holiday, prepare a mixture of following powders Ashwagandha Shatawari Jatamansi Vaj (Vekhand in Maradi, Ghodavaj in Gujarati) Brahmi Jethimadh proportion of each powder is equal in weight. Mixture should be mixed well. It is better to grind them by pounding together, rather than mixing powders. Take the mixture 1 tsp with honey, twice a day, preferably after breakfast/food. Either of these recommendation should be followed for a minimum of three months to notice significant lasting effect. Effect can be enhanced by combining it with some yoga and meditation. Guest guest
Dear Bhairavi, This is in response to your query for ashwagandha. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is renowned as an herbal adaptogen. In the Indian Ayurvedic tradition it is used as a Rasayana, a dietary supplement or practice promoting rejuvenation, mental and physical health, as well as providing a defense against ageing and challenging environmental factors. Ashwagandha root has been shown to protect brain cells from oxidative damage caused by exposure to stressors. Ashwagandha reduced the number of neurons damaged due to oxidative stress by 80% - an effect attributed to protection against stress-induced free radicals in key areas of the brain. In a placebo-controlled study, men and women given an extract of Ashwagandha root showed improved mental skills by performing better in reaction times, mental arithmetic and logical deductions. There are many stress relieving formulations in ayurveda. Ashwagandha can give enhanced results if taken alonwith Brahmi(Bacoppa monniera), Gotu kola(Centella asiatica). Also ayurvedic shirodhara therapy is very effective in anxiety, depression and stress related neurotic illness. Tips to relieve stress - Relaxing music Connecting with others Daily meditation Adequate sleep Soothing baths and massages Enjoying the outdoors Regular breaks from work Enjoy a day at the beach A healthy diet Regular exercise I hope this will help.
