Dear Darla,

Do as Dr. Bhate said. I have something to add. A

good thing for anyone to do is to take a cold shower

in the morning. To do this, it is best to put oil on

your whole body like almond oil. Olive oil or sesame

oil or others will work also. Turn on the cold water

and rub your body with your hands. this will help

warm the body.If you feel too cold then step back out

of the water and continue to rub yourself. Just start

out with what you can handle and try to increase the

time. You can do it from 30 seconds to 11 minutes.

It may be hard to do in Louisiana since the "cold"

water may be like bath water. If you need to wash

your hair, then start with cold shower, then wash hair

with warm water and finish with cold shower. This is

excellent for increasing the circulation, stimulating

the glands and lympathic system. The yogic scriptures

say it is equal to one hour of yoga.

Also, you need to exercise. Yoga, running, brisk

walking, swimming are all good. Do it every day.

Figure out what you can handle daily and do it.

hello, I am new to the group

have a question about food cravings. I am a very vata

person, but very

obese. I live in Louisiana in a usually hot and humid

climate. Lately

I have been craving lots of bitter flavors like tonic

water, but I

feel so very dry afterwards, so I am not sure this is

a good thing.

Heat makes me ill and I have been sick all winter it

seems with strep,

rheumatoid arthritis flares, reflux and much

inflammation. I am always

very thirsty and on various medications that make that

worse. Can you

recommend something or at least tell me if the tonic

water is making

me worse?

thank you,

Darla

Are you related to the Dr. Khalsa who wrote the books Meditation as

Medicine and Food as medicine? They are really good and I am working

on reading them again.

Thank you, the cold shower actually sounds very nice right now. I am

running a slight fever and on antibiotics and not feeling too great

and anything cold is good. I used to travel with a carnival and cold

water was all we had most of the time and it never hurt me, so I will

try what you say. The exercise is giving me a little trouble right now

because I am very run down; I console myself with the thought that I

walk a lot and live in an upstairs apartment and work on the 3rd floor

of my building, but I really need to start a more constant yoga

practice again like I had when I was younger and never ill. It really

bothers me that I can't get into the asanas any more like I once did.

Is it true what I learned when I was younger that just trying your

best to do the practice even if a person cannot get all the way into

the position will still help? Anyway, I am working on that assumption,

and hoping that practice will make me better.
