Toxicity in medicines.

While a number of messages on heavy metals and toxicity are being

posted on the group, this author feels that the subject is being

blown out of proportion.

Concern for heavy metals arises mainly due to air and water pollution

caused by lead, mercury etc. the cause being industrialization. True

saints of this Kaliyuga are trees which absorb pollutants and give us

oxygen for breathing.

It is to be noted that many plants contain toxins, more dangerous

than heavy metals, and ayurvedic texts give elaborate procedures to

purify the plants and fruits to remove or tame these toxins. Even

castor oil contains toxins, which is quite an effective medicine for

Vata diseases. It may not be out of way to mention here that in most

procedures cow urine is the main material for purification of toxins,

due to its well known "vishaghna" properties.

If a small amount of toxin is ingested daily on regular basis, body

develops tolerance. Take nicotine for instance. Whether through

smoking or chewing tobaco, initially body strongly rejects it through

reactions such as vomits, giddiness, headache etc. This test is also

used by present author to test every medicine passing through his

hands. Development of tolerance was used by ancient kings to prepare

Vish-kanyas. The young girls were fed poison in very small quantity,

and they would pass on the same to the enemy of the king through

intimate contact.

Since poison used in proper way can be a medicine, one should shoudl

not think over it, if being given by an expert Vaidya, working for

social cause or fame, rather than money. The faith on

medicine/approach/healer is the primary requirement in any branch of

healing. On the other hand, doubts on the quality/efficacy of

medicine will cause a potent medicine also to become ineffective. A

story told by an eminent Vaidya is illustrative.

A muderer was sentenced to "hanging till death" by Criminal court. A

Vaidya approached him and said, "anyway you are now going to die in a

few days. Can you donate your body for social cause and research? The

idea is that we will conduct an experiment on you and you could die

in the experiment. If you live, anyway you will be hanged later."

"Go ahead after taking permission from the court. I am willing to

participate if it helps people", said the convict.

The permission from the court waqs obtained.

In a public square the convict was brought in handcuffs. Vaidya had

brought a horse, king cobra serpent and was carrying a mouse in a

closed bag. Vaidya allowed serpent to bite the horse. In an hour the

horse died with venomous froth coming out of his mouth.

The convict was now blind folded. Vaidya removed the mouse through

the bag and allowed it to bite the convict's leg.

The convict died in an hour in the same manner as horse, making the

mouse as effectively poisonous as serpent. Faith is a healer as well

as toxin.
