regarding tridosha

These are energies formed from the elements. Example...Vata in the body is

an energy of movement, roughness, dryness etc...which could manifest as dry

skin. Pitta in the body is the energy of water and fire. When the energy of

Pitta is in excess there can be bleeding disorders, inflamation, or

hyperacidity. The doshas are metaphors to conceptualize the essence of various

energies that create, sustain, and work through the body.

Kapha in the body manifests as stagnation, coolness etc...so a body

influenced by Kapha may be obese. The doshas are ways to categorize effects of

prana

so that they can be guided back to their natural state. Meditation is a

great way to experience these energies. Contemplate what they are in

meditation. Then it will become clear.

hi kedar,

there are many ways of understanding the doshas, just like a given term

in sanskrit can have a depth of meanings

the doshas are actual physical entities as well as very subtle

components of physiological and psychological function

as physical entities they are flatus, bile and phlegm - quite literally

- remember that the term "dosha" means "blemish," and thus the doshas

are that which accumulate and disturb physiological function - thus

when flatus, bile or phlegm are retained or disturbed its creates a

physical dysfunction

but tridosha also relates to three basic groupings of qualitative

differences, certain qualities that are manifest from the five elements

that tend to aggregate and guide the activities of the body

ayurvedists enumerate 20 such qualities, called the gurvadi gunas

you will find these 20 qualities listed in the first chapter of the

sutrasthana of the Astanga Hrdaya

for practical purposes these 20 qualities are usually whittled down to

three pairs of opposite qualities (called the upakarmas):

hot-cold

heavy-light

moist-dry

these qualities are direct emanations of the pancabhautic (elemental)

composition of the body

vata represents the qualities of dry, cold and light in the body

pitta represents the qualities of hot, light and moist in the body

kapha represents the qualities of heavy, cold and moist in the body

lets perform a little exercise:

draw a triangle - label dry at the top, hot at the left corner and

heavy at the right corner

on the line that extends between dry and hot write light

on the line that extends between dry and heavy write cold

now above dry write vata - this vata's principle quality

beside hot write pitta - this is pitta's principle quality

beside heavy write kapha - this is kapha's principle quality

now you have a diagram that represents these three pairs of qualities

and how they interact with one another

also, you have a diagram that describes which doshas express which

qualities, thus

vata is principally dry, and shares the qualities of light with pitta,

and the quality of cold with kapha

pitta is principally hot, and shares the qualities of light with vata,

and the quality of moist with kapha

kapha is principally heavy, and shares the qualities of cold with vata,

and the quality of moist with pitta

thus, to treat a vata disorder, you use the opposing qualities on the

diagram, principally moist, along with hot and heavy (e.g. meaty

broths, ashvagandha, bala)

to treat pitta, you use the opposing qualities on the diagram,

principally cold, along with drying and heavy qualities (e.g.

milk/ghee, chandana, kiratatikta)

to treat kapha, you use the opposing qualities on the diagram,

principally light, along with drying and hot qualities (e.g. legumes,

maricha, shunthi)

i have consistently found this model very useful, for my own

understanding and that of my students

it is one way to understand the doshas, their qualities and their

interactions
