Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is not an Indian plant, although it does grow

into the Himalayas and Hindu kush

it is used locally by herbalists in these areas in much the same way as

its used in Chinese medicine

extrapolating from the chinese perception of the plant, ginseng can be

classified as follows:

rasa: sweet, pungent, bitter

vipaka: sweet

virya: hot

karma: used as a rasayana, to build up the vital essence, arrest aging

and decay and decrease vata; specific to strengthening digestion, lung

function, weakness, fatigue and infertility in vattic conditions;

somewhat similar to ashvagandha

contraindications: pitta primarily, kapha secondarily

preparations: powder, decoction, tincture

dose: 1/2-1 tsp (powder); 100 mL/3 oz (decoction); 40-60 drops

(tincture)

this is for the white Chinese ginseng

there is also Red Koran Ginseng, which is steamed and turns a reddish

color

it is much more heating, in Chinese medicine more specific to building

yang (agni)
