Guest guest Posted January 21, 2005 Report Share Posted January 21, 2005 Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is not an Indian plant, although it does grow into the Himalayas and Hindu kush it is used locally by herbalists in these areas in much the same way as its used in Chinese medicine extrapolating from the chinese perception of the plant, ginseng can be classified as follows: rasa: sweet, pungent, bitter vipaka: sweet virya: hot karma: used as a rasayana, to build up the vital essence, arrest aging and decay and decrease vata; specific to strengthening digestion, lung function, weakness, fatigue and infertility in vattic conditions; somewhat similar to ashvagandha contraindications: pitta primarily, kapha secondarily preparations: powder, decoction, tincture dose: 1/2-1 tsp (powder); 100 mL/3 oz (decoction); 40-60 drops (tincture) this is for the white Chinese ginseng there is also Red Koran Ginseng, which is steamed and turns a reddish color it is much more heating, in Chinese medicine more specific to building yang (agni) Caldecott todd www.toddcaldecott.com Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
