slippery elm is a soothing demulcent derived from the inner bark of the

stately Elm tree, rich in mucopolysaccharides that soothe mucosal

inflammation when taken internally, and promotes epithelial healing

when applied as a poultice

generally speaking, its effects could be compared with licorice, bala,

vamsharochana or aloe gel: but it has minimal antimicrobial activity

in ayurvedic terms i would classify it as having a sweet rasa, sweet

vipaka, and cooling virya, reducing pitta and vata, and increasing kapha

i remember using it with one young man admitted to the hospital, with

unexplained vomiting up of blood and abdominal pain

after 24 hrs the father contacted me, and we had him prepare a gruel

from slippery elm powder

24 hrs later the vomiting and pain had stopped, and he was out of the

hospital
