Guest guest
Dear Rebecca, I cannot comment on the slippery elm as I am not sure what it is. >From the information available on it on the net I don't think it will be useful in strep throat. Ghee is in fact recommended during pregnancy. Honey and liquorice also can be given to pregnant women in small doses. Liquorice would create a problem only when taken in large doses. Actually there are a lot of misconceptions about medications for pregnant women. Mahasudarshan kadha (decoction) is also safe for pregnant women. I believe you are using the powdered version (or tablet form). However that too won't be of much help in sore throat except maybe reduce the fever associated with it. Wheter it is a herbal anti-biotic (???) would be a debatable point. If Mahasudarshan is available to you than Eladi Vati or Maha-Eladi vati should also be available. Both these are chewable and would be more beneficial in sore throat. If not gargling with liquorice decoction also is suggested. A paste of holy basil leaves (Tulasi) with honey will also help releive your symptoms. Cybervaidya.
Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I stayed with the mahasudarshan and then like I said a paste of small amount licorice, slippery elm, honey and ghee. Also Vit C and of course prenatal vitamins. It appears to be subsiding rather than increasing. Thank you again. Bless Rebecca
Guest guest
Hi Rebecca; I would have taken the easy way with therapeutic grade/organic essential oil blend called "Thieves" named after the 16th century plague body robbers who were spice and perfume merchants bringing back oils etc from the orient and Egypt and having found the instructions to rub those oils on their bodies and they would not get sick. Very potent anti-strep, antimicrobial broad spectrum, antiviral, anticandida too! This blend includes clove, rosemary, lemon, cinnamon and eucalyptus radiata, I don't know the proportion but it is published. I lived one winter with my son in a home with 2 pre-school age children. That whole fammily got strep 3 times and 3 times went on allopathic antibiotics. May son and I were fine, using the Thieves oil on our feet and throat topically about 3X daily prophylactically. The third time when I felt a little scratchyness in my throat, we gargled, one drop in a little water. It stung a bit, but really felt good and did the job (repeated). I was babysitting and cooking for that family, heavily exposed. Not pregnant, but it is quite safe properly used (keep a little vegetable oil handy if topical skin irritation manifests - takes very little 1 - 2 or 1 - 5 dillution. I'd only use organic qulaity tho (see fascinating product info and research at www.secretofthieves.com, and more extensive listing of scientific studies on essential oils at http://sacredwindow.younglivingworld.com/MainFrame.asp?BodyFrame=products/produc\ tcategory_main.asp I just used this blend on a pregant woman who walked into my home today very sick. She felt better right away ... one application won't clear the illness, but we all were protected from contagion, and this woman is a long way from using any ayurvedic herbs so far (new neighbor). I find essential oils very gentle and safe alternative to ingesting any possible questionable to someone, such as vata aggravating, (or unknown to their doctor) herbs, and very quick results. Clearly your herbal paste was to balance the vata as well as soothe, wise choice. I hope you are saving the pregnancy posts in a collection to share at perinatalayurveda? Warmly, Martha > > Thank you everyone for your suggestions. > I stayed with the mahasudarshan and then like I said a paste of small amount licorice, slippery elm, honey and ghee. > Also Vit C and of course prenatal vitamins. > It appears to be subsiding rather than increasing. > Thank you again. > Bless > Rebecca
