Hi all

I recollect some discussion on this list, dealing with effect of spinal

anasthesia during child birth, on the post partum health of mother

and baby. These days, there is obstetric intervention in every

delivery conducted in hospital. Though this subject is not covered by

modern ayurvedic practice (are there any ayurvedic hospitals which

also act as maternity homes?) we should be concerned by the effects

of modern science decisions on our offsprings. Further, even if the

matter is brought out by modern science, we all should know it, if it

is benific to us.

In this connection I come across some published research, which

states that child birth should not be expedited prematurely, even if

40 weeks have passed already and let mother nature take care of

deliverying the child by itself. In same note,

in some northern communities in India, a good day (astrologically) is found and

mother drinks castor oil so that uterine contractions start. and mother should

learn to bear the pain.

We have a right to know the reason and possible result of every

tablet or I.V. injection, before we accept it, whether by an

ayurvedist or other practitioners. For benifit of expecting moms I

give a summary here:

Labor Induction Increases Intravascular Coagulation Risk

http://mp.medscape.com/cgi-bin1/DM/y/hlNG0D8zB20Dzi0GMge0AX

Pharmacologic induction of labor increases the risk of postpartum

disseminated intravascular coagulation [increased propensity for clot

formation]. The risk was compounded by the combination of labor

induction and maternal age over 34 years, complications during

pregnancy, and gestational age over 40 weeks.

Your concern (expressed in recent post) with C-section deliveries and

those where medication is used to expedite/ relieve pain during the

child birth is shared by this author. Author also tries to discuss on

the post given by you almost nine months back and not replied by

anyone.

The process of perpetuation of any species is natural, designed by

creator. and in order that species keep growing, adequate use of

colors, smells and sensation has been built in so that race goes on.

In animals, the birth is so natural and not as painful. In humans,

the lack of elasticity of pelvic muscles and weak apana vata is the

main reason that birth process requires so much effort.

There is a conclusion drawn by research group that a larger

proportion of deliveries are C-section and at the suggestion of

doctor rather than at the suggestion of mother. Secondly, some of the

medication expedites pains without adequate dilation of the uterian

mouth, which becomes a sufficient reason to go for C-section. This

author had cited references earlier, which point out the effect

of obstetric intervention on the child and mother.

where author argues for a model that takes into account the health

needs and concerns of both patients in "The Unkind Cut of Forced C-

Sections.

Often, due to modern equipment available and utter concern of the

pregnant mom to her future baby, delivery is made premature. Though

baby servives, is subject to serious deprivation of growth process,

which can be learnt from:

Study Says Premature Boys Have More Brain Damage than Preemie Girls

The authors found that 19 percent of babies delivered immediately and

16 percent of those whose delivery was delayed suffered death or

severe disability at or beyond 2 years of age. Most of the variation

was in disability of babies enrolled at less than 31 weeks'

gestation, in whom immediate delivery carried a 10 percent risk of

cerebral palsy, while delayed delivery carried no risk.

IN order to facilitate the labor, many yogasanas are possible, which

Pregnancy: 'Pelvic floor muscle training facilitates labor' Pelvic

floor muscle training facilitates labor

<http://louisc.obgynworld.com/UM/T.asp?A2.4.887.2.297573> Performing

pelvic floor muscle exercises during pregnancy reduces the likelihood

of a prolonged period of active pushing during labor.

IN Ayurveda, several recommendations exist in order to protect fetus,

especially if there exists previous history of abortion(s). Garbhpal

Ras comes immediately to the mind. Supplimentary tablets/capsules to

provide natural herbs/bhasmas to keep Pitta vitiation in check and

provide Calcium, Iron and Folic acid are also available.

However, It is suggested that these be taken under supervision and

after proper check. THey may have to be discontinued under certain

circumstances.

A question about Chyvanprash during pregnancy is also interesting. In

order to metabolize Calcium, mother feels like taking sour items

naturally. C vitamin and E vitamin reqirements also increase.

Chyvanprash contains these by way of Aamalki and Honey, if made

properly. The one which contains 'Pravala pishti' may be better.

Nausea during first trimester has been designed by creator, so that

mother does not eat something which may be harmful to fetus.

Mother is treated as a godess in Indian mythology. Even christian

mother mary is with a child. While city women want all kinds of

modern luxuries and a qualified obstetrician to be present, here is a

situation, where mother has carried our a heroic act, to deliver and

save her child.

I heard that Ayurveda has treatments during pregnancy, so that

pregnancy can be normal rather than with surgery. I wonder why

proportion of C-section pregnancies has increased so much these days?

Can anyone suggest precautions so that pregnancies are problem free?
