Aspects of the antimicrobial efficacy of grapefruit seed extract and

its relation to preservative substances contained.

von Woedtke T, Schluter B, Pflegel P, Lindequist U, Julich WD.

Institute of Pharmacy, Ernst Moritz Arndt University, Greifswald,

Germany.

The antimicrobial efficacy as well as the content of preservative

agents of six commercially available grapefruit seed extracts were

examined. Five of the six extracts showed a high growth inhibiting

activity against the test germs Bacillus subtilis SBUG 14, Micrococcus

flavus SBUG 16, Staphylococcus aureus SBUG 11, Serratia marcescens SBUG

9, Escherichia coli SBUG 17, Proteus mirabilis SBUG 47, and Candida

maltosa SBUG 700. In all of the antimicrobial active grapefruit seed

extracts, the preservative benzethonium chloride was detected by thin

layer chromatography. Additionally, three extracts contained the

preserving substances triclosan and methyl parabene. In only one of the

grapefruit seed extracts tested no preservative agent was found.

However, with this extract as well as with several self-made extracts

from seed and juiceless pulp of grapefruits (Citrus paradisi) no

antimicrobial activity could be detected (standard serial broth

dilution assay, agar diffusion test). Thus, it is concluded that the

potent as well as nearly universal antimicrobial activity being

attributed to grapefruit seed extract is merely due to the synthetic

preservative agents contained within. Natural products with

antimicrobial activity do not appear to be present.

[Analysis of components in natural food additive "grapefruit seed

extract" by HPLC and LC/MS]

[Article in Japanese]

Sakamoto S, Sato K, Maitani T, Yamada T.

The components in a commercial natural food additive "Grapefruit seed

extract" and the ethanol extract of grapefruit seeds were analyzed by

HPLC and LC/MS. The HPLC chromatogram of the commercial grapefruit seed

extract was quite different from that of the ethanol extract of

grapefruit seeds. Three main peaks were observed in the chromatogram of

the commercial grapefruit seed extract. By comparison of the retention

times and the absorption spectra with those of authentic samples, two

peaks were ascribed to methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate and

2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenylether (triclosan). Triclosan was

also identified by LC/MS by using the negative electrospray ionization

method.

as you might be able to tell from the abstracts i sent, the activity of

grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is unrelated to the grapefruit seed

themselves, and is entirely related to the synthetic preservatives

contained within it

most GSE products on the market contain a patented product call

citracidal, and because it is patented they do not disclose how its

made or its ingredients: they simply say citracidal ®, a proprietary

grapefruit seed extract, with water and/or glycerin

when this issue of preservatives in the product have been pointed out

before, the manufacturers claim that the preservative benzethonium

hydrochloride in particular is some how formed naturally during

processing

not only is this highly unlikely, it is besides the point

1. a lot of natural ingredients start off as the substrate for making

synthetic drugs: this does not make them natural anymore than

Frankenstein

2. benzethonium chloride, also found as a disinfectant in many

cosmetics, is not approved for internal use

the other commonly found preservative, triclosan, is a pesticide that

is chemically related to dioxins, has been found in waste water,

accumulating in the tissues of ocean fish and has even been found in

human breast milk - its commonly found in 'antibacterial' soaps, and is

speculated to be a factor in the emerging issue of antibiotic resistance

> I went in the drugstore were i bought grape fruit extract to ask about

> the antibiotic eventually contained in it.

> In that moment the sales representative of the house that produces it,

> came in the shop.

> He told me that this is impossible for the reason that they are

> obliged to declare on the bottle all the elements that it contains.

> They are controlled.

> On the bottle it is written only grape fruit and glycerin.

if in fact the product does not contain the patented citracidal ®

ingredient found in GSE such as nutrabiotic , then it probably does

not contain these preservatives

but then i am very sorry to say that the product has NO antimicrobial

activity whatsoever, and is manufactured by people that simply don't

understand the basic science, as is often the case in this industry

Ayurveda has used various Citrus species for thousands of years, and

yet i am not aware of one single reference to the usage of the seed as

an antimicrobial agent in infectious disease

I'm really gratefull for htis info. No wonder it always felt

so harsh; I just thought it was about the intense bitter influences.

I was given an extra bottle by a friend and always forget I have it.

Do you suppose the citrus industry dreamed this up to make use of

the seed matter and play a joke on the natural foods industry?

perhaps

or it was a nazi conspiracy or maybe martians

whatever it is, the underlying motive appears to be nothing more than

ol' fashioned greed

it should be an axiom, never trust overly-enthusiastic adherents of

ANYTHING!

when i was in herbal college, the people that liberally dosed

themselves with GSE were the same folks that absolutely LOVED super

blue green algae

of course, super blue was taken off the market when it was discovered

that the algae was actually toxic, and contained high levels of fecal

coliform

these people probably went off after the next craze, after dropping out

of college because it was too hard, and now extoll the virtues of the

next craze, like fermented noni juice that has to be irradiated

because its so full of microbial toxins

here's a joke that my friend Alan Tillotson posted on the internet -

and yet he still gets inquiries to this day of where to get Super Blue

Green Yellow Magnetic Volcanic Colloidal Nino Juice

***

Dear Friends,

I would like to share with you a remarkable new discovery I made last

week. (Before I begin, I want to assure you that, as a Taoist priest, I

am forbidden to lie.) I have been working underground in the health

care field for over 20 years, so I have had plenty of time to fill out

and mail in coupons, and last month I won a free trip for two to a

tropical island. I brought my dog Elmer. While wandering around ancient

volcanoes, Elmer began to yip excitedly, so I followed him to the top

of a small dead volcano. Elmer had been trained by me to eat a diet of

pure health food since, and I knew that yip meant some sort of health

product must be close. But I wasn't prepared to find what I did - Super

Blue Green Yellow Magnetic Volcanic Colloidal Nino Juice!

At first I didn't know what I had found. As I peered into the void, all

I could see was what looked like an oil slick surounded by tiny little

trees. The trees were magnificent, like those Japanese things - you

know, the little trees that look like big trees. I used my cellular

phone to call my friend Professor Albert Schatz, PhD, spiritual healer

and soil scientist, who quickly deduced that the volcanic soil, perhaps

the oldest soil on earth, had strange magnetic qualities that it got

from being originally at the center of the Earth, and someone had

dropped some Nino seeds into the volcano, which sprouted and absorbed

the magnetic colloidal minerals from the volcanic ash, which then

produced the tiny trees with their blue green yellow fruits. (Nino is

an ancient beverage drink used by Islanders to induce visions, dye

their hair, and stop diarrhea.) He could not deduce the effect of the

fruit, however, without trying some. Elmer, however, had already eaten

several thousand of the fruits (which are really tiny), so when I

returned to my hotel, I watched anxiously. All that seemed to happen at

first was that Elmer stopped defecating or urinating, and his

musculature changed almost overnight. Originally a weenie dog, he now

resembled a german shepherd. Elmer is actually a girl dog, but I didn't

know that until his first heat, after I had named him, so I wasn't

surprised when all the male dogs in the area began to gather around the

hotel lobby.

To make a long story short, we discovered that Elmer was now exuding a

super strong pheromone - you know, that smell that insects and people

give off when they are in rut - that made him irresistible. Dogs came

from all over the island. It was like a riot. Some people believed that

this had something to do with the two whales that beached that

afternoon, but I am a bit of a skeptic. I need real proof before I'll

believe anything.

Months of research at my apartment back home brought out the real

truth. Super Blue ,Green ,Yellow Magnetic Volcanic Colloidal Nino Juice

enters the colon, and the suspended particles magnetically attach

themselves to the colon membrane. There, their unique colloidal blue

,green ,yellow structure causes them to absorb all sorts of food,

juice, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, fat, carbohydrates,

proteins, anthraquinones, glycosides, and cosmic vibrations, and

transform them into pure energy. This is why Elmer stopped defecating.

The juice also transmutes all negative energy, including industrial

filth, air pollution and even sugar, into its sub-atomic state, where

is is hydolized and hydrogenated into amino acid carbon chains which

reform into energized spring water particles which your cells can

absorb without producting waste products. This is why you stop peeing

too. The research is continuing, and we expect more to be added to this

e-mail and spread around as people transform themselves with the

product.

Our group, the Super Blue ,Green ,Yellow Magnetic Volcanic Colloidal

Nino Juice Marketing Association, has entered into an exclusive

contract with the Native People around the volcano, who had heard about

the success of their relatives in the casino business. They are now

growing them at the secret volcano site. To live forever (no one who

has used the product has yet died), send me your credit card number,

and your first shipment of juice, in thimble sized containers, taken

one thimbleful each day, will arrive shortly. For an extra $100 per

month, you can send your own Super Blue ,Green ,Yellow Magnetic

Volcanic Colloidal Nino Juice story and your bank account number. We

will bulk e-mail your story along with ordering instructions to

millions of people over the internet for you each month. We will then

deduct the cost of the juice from your credit card, and then ship the

juice out for you, and then electronically deposit the money we receive

back into your bank account, minus a small service fee. You don't have

to do anything, and your bank account will grow pyramidically, so, in

addition to being eternal, (no one who has used the juice has yet

died), you will be rich.

And don't forget about the pheromones you women will be exuding. At

first we thought men were denied this benefit, but we later found that

Super Blue Green Yellow Magnetic Volcanic Colloidal Nino Juice

increases testosterone by 492%, and the combination of that with the

new muscles and increased bank account creates a similar effect on the

opposite sex.
