Hi Lara,

Good that you wish to use ayurveda for teenagers. When they see

ayurveda right from this age, they will keep life time loyalty to

ayurveda, an inexpensive health insurance, at least in India.

Acne is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands and hair

follicles which primarily targets teenagers and menstruating women.

Blackheads, pimples, small superficial sebaceous cysts and scars

affect your forehead, temples, cheeks, chin, chest, back and in rare

cases the whole body.

Causes

According to John Lee, M.D., a natural hormone replacement advocate

and an author of `What your doctors would not tell you about

Menopause' and similar other books, acne in menstruating women

is caused by excess testosterone male hormone. You can visit:

http://www.johnleemd.net/forms/hb_test.html

According to ayurveda and several western hebalists, irregular hours

of eating, excessive consumption of starch, sugar, fried and fatty

foods are the causes. Acne is also attributed to ama (toxins) formed

due improper movement of bowels, finding their way into the blood

stream. Excessive intake of caffeins (tea, coffee), alcohol, smoking

also causes Acne, mostly in male patients. Hot spicy foods, fried

foods, junk foods increase pitta dosha and disturb hormone balance in

the blood. Excess male hormones are caused by Garlic, Onion, spices

etc.

There is alrmingly large proportion of women, especially in U.K. and

U.S.A, in whose case Acne led to development of Polycystic Ovarian

Syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of infertility; this explains to

some extent why women should keep away from intoxicants; please check

Treatment

There are so many drugs advertised in western countries as well as

India for treatment of Acne. In case you have used a most well known

drug, please check up its dangerous side effects at:

Ayurvedic cures available in India use mainly Neem, sandalwood,

turmeric Cinnamon for local application ointment. Fullers earth

(multani mitti) is a common ingredient along with rose water for

local application. Haridra Khand is a Panch Gavya medicine for Acne

and similar problems involving blemishes on skin.

Giloy, Daruharidra, Anantmul, Ardusi, Punarnava, Kadu, Chirait,

Manjista, Trifala herbs readily come to mind which pacify pitta in

blood. There are many more, of less importance. Take 4 tsp mixture

(in equal proportion) of above powders, put in 4 cups of water and

slow boil till ½ cup remains. Drink this early morning empty stomach

for three months.

Eating Gulkand also helps. Similarly, soaked dates, black dried

grapes (soaked) also pacify pitta. Avoid meat, sugar, tea/coffee,

condiments, pickles, soft drinks, ice creams, refined floor items,

bakery products and fried items. Green salads, fruits while avoiding

dairy fats would be a good practice. Amongst dairy items ghee of

Indian cow is pacifying pitta, but is very costly. Ghee prepared from

any other animal milk, or in fast process (starting from cream) is

not medicinal.

Lemon juice, watermelon juice, water in which a 1 tsp of equal

mixture of powders of coriander seeds, cummin seeds, fennel seeds is

soaked for 2 hours is a cooling drinks helping Acne cure rapidly.

For local application, crushed fresh peel or paste of fenugreek or a

mixed paste of sandalwood and turmeric on affected area. Those who

are in India can use `Ambahaldi' instead of ordinary turmeric.

Washing face with lukewarm water thrice a day using `Neem' Soap or a

soap made from Fuller's earth (available in India) also helps to

lighten Acne fast.

How fast Acne cures will depend on whether the teenager you have in

mind also has hormone imbalance.

Dandruff:

Reagrding dandruff, we in India use a mixture of following powders:

Aamla, Trifla, Neem-leaves, Methi (Fenugreek seeds), Aritha, Jaswanti.

Make this mixture, take 4 tsp in a cup, add 2 tsp curd, a little

water to make a medium consistency paste. Apply this paste at roots

of hair and leave it to dry for 30 minutes, or till its action is

felt. Wash hair with luke warm water. Do this thrice a week and do

not use any other soap, shampoo, oil. No herbal shampoo is

purely 'herbal' if it causes lather. In ayurveda there is nothing

which causes lather. The paste described here takes care of dandruff

and also make hair smooth, long, thick and shining. Gray will not

turn to black, however. That requires kaya-kalpa treatment, far more

expensive.

Most of the herbs described here can be obtained under the same names

from Allayurveda.com or similar other online sites.

If you use any of these recommendations, please give a feedback to

ayurveda, so that others also derive benifit.

Thank you Dr.Bhate for all the good advises. I have introduced what you wrote to

the girl I referred to, and I will try to help her change the diet. Sugar will

be the hardest thing to reduce from her diet. I have ordered Neem soap, which

luckily is produced in Norway.

You advised to avoid refined flour and bakery products to reduce acne, is that

because of the gluten in flours?

I have to try to find a Latin – Indian dictionary to be able to use the herbs

you mentioned. Is it so that you meant that a mix of rose water, cinnamon and

turmeric could be used for local application? Or is each of those products

equally good applicators?

I will tell you about the results of the treatments in a few weeks.

Can you please tell more about Kaya-kalpa treatment? That sounded very

interesting too.

Thanks again @};- Best regards from Lara

Yes, it is suspected that refines floors and soft carbs aid hormone

imbalance, which causes acne, hair loss, weight gain etc in case of

menstruating girls and peri-meno moms. please check up:

If possible, mix sandal powder, cinnamon, turmeric, fullers earth in

equal proportion and add rose water to make a consistent paste for

application. Mixture is more potent than individual ingredient. If

you find that Fullers earth is difficult to obtain you can leave it

out.

You will have to visit India and shell down your purse heavily. Very

costly treatment, affordable to rich persons. Details are kept top

secret by professionals.
