Guest guest
Friends, I have a couple of queries; I wonder if someone in the group can help: 1. My daughter, 34 years, has extreme pain in her knees. Flexing them becomes very painful. She is taking Shallaki, using Eladi oil for massage but there seems little improvement. What would someone advise? 2. I have an old (4years) complaint of my toes burning and paining excrutiatingly after about half hour of walking. I've tried loosing weight, various oils, changing footwear etc. but nothing seems to cure it. Kindly help. Thank you Sudha [Quoted digest in entire deleted by moderator, members requested to go to home page of the group and post their querries by using Post or Reply button, rather than replying daily digest emails; home page of the group is accessed by URL http://health.ayurveda ]

Pain with stiffness is rheumatism. following is a general description of possibilities of treatment. Diverse remedies suggested, follow what you can and reflect your experience to group so that we also sharpen our tools. IN a remote guidance of this nature, only this much can be expected. Being a common ailment these days, you will have multitude of recommendations from various members. Author suggests that visiting a nearby ayurvedic practitioner will be the best advise for you. Athritis is a curse of materialism race, sedantary life style out-of- tune with nature, waist height cooking platforms and lack of yoga/meditation etc in modern days. We get cases aged 28-30 years also these days, and hormone imbalance causing inadequate blood circulation is one prominent reason. The root of this can also be birth (delivery), after which post partum anti-vata treatment is not done properly. Early diagnosis of Arthritis and Rheumatism prevents possibility of physical disability later. These ailments can occur at early age, say in children aged even six months. The first sign of these ailments is the swelling in the neighbourhood of neck area or ankle bone or fingures. Though there are many types of arthritis, they are not hereditary. The objective of the treatment is to reduce pain, increase mobility of the joint, avoid disability of the joint. Women suffer more from Rheumatism while men suffer fore from Gout. Though modern science tries to treat arthritis by fomentation, surgery and drug therapy. Surgery is preferred over drugs for obviopus reasons. Todays patient wants to get rid of ailment at earliest, no matter at what cost. The pain killer injections given in the joints have only limited influence for 2-4 weeks and need to be taken again, slowly developing drug tolerance. According to some practitioners, arthritis can be managed by balanced diet, some exercise, management of posture and pain management drugs. However, patients are reluctant to walk due to aggravating pain. Let us consider arthritis from ayurvedic perspective. The presence of this ailment is indicated by: · Severe pain in the affected joints. · Muscles, ligaments and cartilage become inflamed. · Movement of the joint becomes extremely painful, especially in cold, windy and damp weather. It is notable that if this disease is not taken care of properly at the initial stages the joint becomes immobile and may also become permanently deformed. Causes This ailment is caused due to the aggravation of Vata (air) dosha and accumulation of Ama (toxins). Ama gets deposited in the weak areas of the body, joints with a simultaneous aggravation of Vata that is known as Ama Vata (arthritis). Weak digestion, constipation, overeating and very little physical activity are the symptoms that can develop in a patient of arthritis. Remedies Ama must be digested and Vata reduced in the body. Digestion should be improved and fasting for one day is beneficial for digesting Ama. Two teaspoons of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey mixed in a cup of warm water is good for curing arthritis, take twice a day. Bake one or two green colored brinjals. Mash and fry in about 2 tablespoons of castor oil. Spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, garlic and salt can be added while frying. Once daily for 2- 3 months. Another alternative is to take ½ tsp ginger powder, ½ tsp giloy powder, cook it with 2 cups of water on slow heat till 1/2 cup remains. Mix in 2 tbsp castor oil and stirr well. Drink once a day. Castor oil quantity should be 1 tsp in the beginning and gradually increase to 2 tbsp (30 ml) as body is able to digest without more than 2 motions a day. Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm water, twice a day helps cure arthritis. One raw clove of garlic every day is very beneficial. This clove can be fried in ghee (clarified butter) or castor oil. Once daily for 2-3 months. Guggulu (a herb) is very helpful in curing arthritis. If available, eat half a teaspoon twice a day after meals with warm water. A variety of guggula tablets [Yogaraj, Mahayogaraj, Kaishor, Goxuraddi, Panchtikta, Trayodashang, Sinhnad, Punarnavadi, Bhallatak, etc] can be prescribed to a patient, but which one depends on pulse diagnosis. Paste of 1 teaspoon red chilies and fresh ginger mixed in half a cup of sesame oil and strain. Gently rub this oil on the affected joints. ·Camphor, wintergreen and cinnamon oils are also beneficial for external application. Mahanarayan oil, Mahavishgarbh Oil, Vatnashak Tel made from sesame oil, ginger powder, turmeric powder, garlic, etc is also found useful for osteo arthritis. Author has a powder, very inexpensive, which can be turned into paste by addition of water and paste externally applied on inflamed joint for an hour. Helps in reducing swelling and pain in rheumatoid arthritis, but requires at least two months of daily application. Powder can not be exported. Other than castor oil, another enemy of Aamvata is gold. Several tablets using gold are now available in Indian market, which give relatively fast relief from pain, but not like pain killers. Rheumaraj, Rheumanil, Rheumasil etc are brandnames. Cost of these tablets is rather high, beyond reach of Indian middle class. Those who are in Mumbai can approach arthritis camp in Shree Krishna Haveli, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, for a special belt for knee, waist which helps reduce swelling and pain. Cow is a holy mother for Hindus. A variety of PanchGavya medicines are available in Northern parts of India (Punjab, Haryana, M.P., U.P.). More details of these can be obtained from nearest Goushala/PanchGavya medicine unit in neighbourhood. Following is the diet suggested for the patients suffering form arthritis: Vegetable juices and soups Coconut water Coconut milk Carrot juice Beet root juice Cucumber juice Cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini and pumpkin Spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida, garlic, fennel and turmeric. Green salad with a dressing of lemon juice and a little salt Khichadi (recipe made by cooking rice and mung dal ) Regular physical exercise which body can tolerate without pain and and massage with oil should form an important part of the routine. The patient of arthritis must avoid the following: Eating hot, spicy and fried foods, sweets, wind forming foods like cabbage, Cauliflower, spinach, and potatoes. Potatoes, if cooked with skin, become less dangerous. Too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yoghurt (curd/buttermilk during night), chocolate, cocoa. Antibiotics, painkillers, steroids and nicotine Sleeping during the day Staying up late at night Mental tensions like worry, anxiety. Too many medicines, too many recommendations. Follow as much as you can. A simple but tough routine, proposed by a Jain monk and tried out by the author on only one patient so far, will be covered next week. Being tough, no patient is willing generally. > 2. I have an old (4years) complaint of my toes burning > and paining excrutiatingly after about half hour of > walking. Though appearance of Gout like symptoms in women is less common, this indicates two possibilities. Lack of blood circulation (modern science has names such as fibromialgia, atherosclerosis etc) is the main cause. Have you checked blood sugar; often for diabetics, this type of pain or numbness in toes is also encountered. Take hot water, add 2-3 tbsp sea salt. dip lower legs (knee downward) in the bucket for 15-20 minutes. You can also try 2 tabs of Hridayarnav Ras (Many pharmacies make this Tablet), and two tabs of Kaishor Guggulu, slight chew and swallow with warm water after lunch as well as dinner. Ashokarishtam 3 tsp (15 ml) with equal water mixed can also be taken after food. Rub lower side of toes with pumice tone at bath time, at the time when there is no pain. Use of a mixture of Aswagandha tailam and Jatyadi Tailam for 5 minute massage of lower side of feet is found helpful. Sometimes there can be a local clot/benign tumor pressing on the arteries supplying blood to toes area. If such a possibility, there exist ayurvedic remedies. She is consantlly in pain, she does not want to continue yoga because she is in pain after we are through with the class. I also take her for massage work, Heller massage, which when done she feels alittle relief. She eats little meat, chicken, and rarely fish, and her period is usally at the start very painful. I sthis the same as the first message and should she follow the same course of healing? Respectfully, Jim
