Members might recollect prescription of Tulsi tea

(Tulsi, ginger, jaggery) recommended for deprssion by this author.

Malaria, Asthma, chronic cough, family planning are some more areas of the

application of this herb. It is added to a variety of formulations meant for

skin diseases. In India, a firm makes soap under the brand name "Tulsi"

and it is a genuine Tulsi soap meant to treat skin diseases. Volumes

of material has been written about this wonderful

plant. The mythological god who gives adequate

nutritious food to whole universe is Lord Vishnu, and Tulsi is

regarded as his wife. Every year, after Diwali festival, every Hindu in

India celebrates this marriage, just at the Tulsi plant pot. What lord

Vishnu cant give, his wife, holy Tulsi gives, i. e. peace of mind.

See how Ayurveda is built in the Hindu mythology and daily life.

A recent well researched article on Tulsi, underlining its

use in depression and having many phyto chemistry details and

references is available at:

In one of the medical gardens attached to Vedshala in Maharashtra,

India, author found number of Tulsi plants planted close to each

other. The requirement of Tulsi was large as they used to perform

several religious ceremonies which need Tulsi offering. A rather

unusual experience was noted there by accident. Author started his

usual 3 minute Pranayama schedule in the garden itself. The period

of 'kumbhaka' during pranayama was noted to increase by about 25%. A

senior vaidya later explained that Tulsi, during photo-synthesis,

gives out a little ozone, in addition to oxygen. This may be the

cause. Ozone is a powerful re-juvenator, being used in central air-

conditioning systems, to freshen up re-circulating cold air. Since

not much scientific research has been carried out on this aspect, it

is difficult to prove this fact scientifically.

Incidentally, another information which was given by

a spiritual leader in Mumbai, was that ozone percentage is also slightly

higher in air, early morning, about two hours before sun-rise. This is also the

time when "Sushumna" nadi awakens. This is the super-expressway transporting

cosmic energy (Pranashakti) from Muladhar Chakra to higher centres located along

Central Nervous System. The hurdles in this pathway is the basic cause of

depressing thoughts as well as disturbance in the metabolism which builds seven

dhatus leading to Ojas build-up. More information on the chakras and yoga

techniques to awaken them can be found on advanced_yoga_techniques .

Ozone is connected with awakening of hormones (perhaps endorphins) pacifying

the mind and encouraging spiritual thoughts. Author has been recommending early

morning walk to everyone since then. It appears that Ozone is also

given out when aerobic decomposition of cow dung during manure

process takes place. No scientific proof, but similar effect on

lengthening of kumbhaka was observed when carrying out Pranayama near

a compost plant. Knowing some of this information, in order to solve the problem

of Garbage disposal, a Muncipal Corporation near Mumbai (Thane) has started

forcing every housing complex in the city to create a manure making plant in the

complex itself. This will reduce pollution and purify city air. It appears that

we are going back to village life.

Author requests all to give further information,

experiences, books etc. on the ozone aspect.

Dr Bhate
