Guest guest
Nosebleed (REF: Book of Ayurvedic Home remedies by Dr Lad) is a pitta disorder with some vata symptoms; try using a pitta pacifying diet. For instance try using fresh ginger instead of dry ginger powder; the cloves and peppercorns are probably helping (even though they are pitta aggravating) because your son is having a cold/flu. Also avoid standing out in the sun as much as possible. -yogaman
Guest guest
Nosebleed Shows up in Sept-October The September-October time span is `Sharad Rutu'. In this period the `Pitta' problems increase in intensity. Head ache, loose motions, vomitting, boils in the mouth, hemorrage, vertigo, fainting etc, as outlined in earlier message No. 2474 on this list. Nosebleed belongs to same category, becoming excess in Sharad and Grishma rutu. The increased heat of sun, causes accumulated doshas to show up. Pitta means impurities and alterations in blood contents. When pitta increases, the heat in the blood is said to increase. Here heat does not mean temperature, but the `anti-clotting' tendency. Ayurvedists also find that the palms, forehead and feet bottom are also felt warm when touched by healer. Excess use of pain killers, antibiotics, Aspirin may also cause this `anti-coagulation' effect, causing internal bleeding in intestines. Exact correspondence between pitta and disease named by modern science is difficult. When pitta increases, the blood vessels get ruptured and the pitta ladden blood leaves the body through nose, mouth, stools, urinal and vaginal openings. Ayurveda terms this condition under generic name `Rakta-pitta'. The quantity of blood discharge increases with pitta encouraging diet. In the author's opinion, the body is trying to eliminate undesirable blood and unless the quantity is large to cause concern, the natural flow should be allowed so that remaining blood gets purified. In ayurveda, blood is deliberately discharged out in certain circumstances to purify the blood. In India, especially Mumbai, the pitta pacifier fruits also arrive in the market by this time, viz, Aamalki. In this post, we will address the issue of nose bleed mainly. According to Acharya Bhavmishra the way a dam prevents the flow of water, the Lepan of Amalki stops the flow of nose bleed rapidly. If one is able to get fresh unripe Aamalki, crush it in the grater, fry in ghee (clarified butter) for few minutes (should not turn brown) and apply like an ointment on face and nose. In case fresh Aamalki is not available, one can use its dry powder. Another important anti-hemorrage herb is Ardusi. According to Acharya Charaka, it separates the pitta portion of the blood. The receipe is as follows. Take equal mixture of Harde and Ardusi powders. Add black raisins by equal weight. Raisins should be either seedless or seeds should be removed before mixing. Crushing in the mixture or pounding in `kharal' under pressure will mix all the ingredients to uniform thick Leha. Make pea sized tablets. Swallow two tablets thrice a day with water. According to Acharya Charaka this is very effective remedy for separating pitta from blood and laxative effect of Harde eliminates this pitta through bowels. The raisins cool the heat in the blood and add to Haemoglobin carriers to multiply. The copper content of the raisins and their use in anaemia has been discussed in earlier posts. In the special case under consideration today, the ardusi is also helpful for treating cough/cold. If there is rapid and excessive discharge of blood through nose or getting above powders is difficult, following pharmacy medicines can also be used: Take Shatavari powder 1 gram, Chandrakala Ras 1 Tab, Kamadudha Ras 1 Tab, Rasayan Churna 1 gram, Laghu Vasant Malini 1 Tab, Dhatri Ghanvati 1 Tab (six items). Mix all these in Kharal or Ceramic bowl by grinding, add a little ghee and sugar and lick twice a day, preferably morning and evening. This is poweful anti-hemorrage remedy for blood discharge through any paths out of body. It has several 'sure-shot' cooling medicines. Avoid chillies, brinjal, ginger, pepper etc. If ginger is necessary, must be boiled till water reduces to half quantity. All leafy green and slender vegetables are cooling. Drink made from soaking black raisins, fennel seeds, candy sugar is also desirable twice a day. Avoid all kinds of oils. Fried/spicy items and curd (yoghurt) contra- indicated. Avoid all cerals except green gram soup and Khitchri. Rice wheat are cooling, bakery items best avoided. These do not allow rapid recovery under Raktapitta condition. Garlic, drumstick, papaya, curd, tomato should be avoided. Heavy exercise, sunbath, sauna-steam bath, going out in hot sun, staying awake late night, should be totally avoided. The garden where water is sprayed, A.C. halls, hill stations, river, lakes are the areas where pitta dosha reduces. A light massage by cow ghee on palms and feet bottom at bedtime helps to reduce burning sensation and sound sleep thereby also helps. Guest guest
This suggestion if the weather has turned dry, or you have been/or live in high altitude ... in addition to the high pitta. Try several drops of warm ghee in each nostril, once or twice a day. Even sesame oil. Or have him rub some in, enough to be able to strongly sniff it deep into the sinuses. I have used this method for a number of people including myself with good results, though the word profuse was not really part of the symptoms, so use your good judgement. Guest guest
Thank you Dr. Bhate. You have helped me in so many ways. Nice to see you on this site. Is 'Sharad Rutu' time span the same world wide? For example I live in Alaska. We did have an unusually hot June and July, but usually not so. 12 degrees celsius today. We do not have access to black raisins so I used saskatoon berries, which are also antioxidant. My son's nosebleeds are not as regular nor as intense. It bled about 1pm Saturday, at 9pm Sunday . I kept him home Monday from school and gave him massage and put ghee on hands, feet and head and had him put ghee in his nostrils. Now he goes one whole day without nosebleed,Wednesday. His hands are warm, but his feet are cold. I have been studying Ayurveda since 70's and most recently with Dr. Frawley. My son has malabsorption , due to white spots on nails of middle finger , ring finger, thumb same on left hand with index warm hands, cooler clammy feet, pitta finger lines in nails. Vayu excess lips. From my amateur observation of the pulses, his right hand the pericardian slightly weak, and spiritual pulse weak and the left hand the kidney was weak and bladder slightly weak. I give him acidophulus to drink and have been giving him rice bran syrup (vit b), vit A, multiple mineral and additonal vitamin C. Additionally we added more leafy greens to his diet. The nail diagnosis is calcium deficiency due to the nosebleeds, correct? What are your feelings on vitamins? What do you suggest for more calcium in his diet? --- In ayurveda, "Shirish Bhate" <shirishbhate> wrote: > Nosebleed Shows up in Sept-October > > The September-October time span is `Sharad Rutu'. Guest guest
Dear Hariatma Kaur Khalsa The intention of the earlier message was to emphasize that in tropics Sharad Rutu increases Pitta problems. Since the definition of Rutu itself is difficult in regions close to poles, one need not attach too much importance to Rutu. What is important that "nose bleed" or puncturing of blood vessel anywhere in body and resulting hemorrage is "Pitta" problem no matter where you are located. Accordingly ayurveda suggests pacification of Pitta dosha. One does not treat patients according to calendar. However, Vaidyas note relations between ailments and calendar and stock medicines accordingly.
