Guest guest
Someone I know woke up a few mornings with a swollen knee. That person does not know what caused it. The day before, there was a small pimple on the knee. The day the knee was swollen, the person had a slight influenza with slightly achy joints and a slight fever. Those things are gone but the knee is still swollen and he has a hard time walking because of the fluid buildup. This person has had a little joint trouble before and has a small "knot" behind that same knee. What would be the best way to treat this? Thanks, GB Khalsa
Guest guest
this is a classic case of ama forming in the joints and vitiating the doshas both internal and external therapies can be employed not knowing your access to Indian herbs, i probably should direct my comments to herbs you can get locally - you live in Alaska right? 1) detoxify - light, little and liquid, with lots of steamed vegetables, vegetable and meat broths, ginger/onions/garlic, mung/adzuki, basmati rice; no dairy, sugar, flour, or fatty foods until symptoms abate; fresh vegetable juices including carrot, celery and beet with ginger can be helpful 2) topical therapies - something to break up the congestion and restore proper function; my personal favorite here would have to be Dr. Christopher's Bone, Flesh and Cartilage formula, apply as a fomentation, twice daily. There are a whole bunch of other herbs that can be prepared as a fomentation or salve including herbs like sea kelp, lobelia, ginger, juniper berry, saindhava and cayenne; in Ayurveda there are special formulas like Murivenna, Balaguduchyadi taila or Pinda taila 3) internal therapies - so many good herbs for this. the focus here is the kidneys, liver and bowels. One of my favorite kidneys herbs grows in your area - its called Prince's Pine, or Pipsissewa. Take a generous amount of the fresh herb and boil for 30 minutes, and drink 1/2 litre a day, before meals - color should be dark green/brown so if its not add more herb or boil longer. To this can be added other herbs like alfalfa, chickweed, and nettle, and maybe some mint for flavor. Also you can use the tincture of Pipsissewa, 40 drops in water thrice daily. Also, of great importance is liver and colon function, so choose a remedy that will keep these systems chugging along, e.g. triphala, isabgol, black radish seed, barberry, yellowdock etc etc.. Ayurvedic herbal formulas to detoxify the joints include yogarajaguggulu and kaishora guggulu good luck...
