hithere,

I'll be making my virgin voyage to Burning Man this year and would

love to hear your thoughts on keeping a proper balance in a mental and

physical space of extremes.

i'll be there for 8 days plus 2 driving and i'll sleep mostly in a tent.

my dominant dosha is pitta and minor vata with a leeetle kapha.

I'll be experiencing conditions such as... hot days, cool nights,

extremely dusty, heavy on the alkaline and high winds. Non-stop

activity and noise. Extreme personal expression, heavy dancing at any

time and abundant hugs.

good foods?

good sleep cycles?

oils or herbs?

also i'd love to hear thoughts on nutritional preparation in this week

leading up to my depature. I'm thinking of a short fast this weekend

followed by a truckload of fresh veggies and fruit...

a little white meat for batteries.. even though i'm pitta?

thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

David

Hello David,

The whole event is Rajasic with its loud music and active nature and

thus also Vata increasing. Hot weather brings more Pitta. To increase

these doshas is your own conscious choise.

To counter the propable imbalances, you should consume cooling and

nourishing food with sweet taste predominant. Milk is good if possible

considering the weather. Do sesame oil massages on whole body daily, as

it calms down vata. Take some Aloe Vera juice and have a sip twice a

day, as it is cooling and strengthening. Regarding herbs, take some

ashwagandha and brahmi as mental and nervous tonic.

After the event take enough rest, do some asanas and meditation to

balcance your body and mind - to bring down the rajasic energy and to

increase sattva in your being.

Dear David

there are two issues:

1) surviving the desert

2) surviving the weirdness

for #1, stay out the sun and cover up: have a head scarf that can be

used to cover the face in dust storms. in Arabia the men wear a long

one piece outfit made of light white cotton called a thoub, and a head

covering called gutrah; these is ideal clothing to wear in the desert;

in western India and Pakistan men wear the loose-fitting shalwar and

kameez and a length of cloth that is tied around the head and can also

be used to cover the face. the long and short of it is to wear light

white cotton, head wear and something to protect your face

other than clothing:

keep hydrated, 3+ liters water daily, bring oral rehydration packets

wear shoes always

eat cooling, moistening foods (e.g. fresh fruit, fresh vegies, rice,

coconut, jaggery, milk; meat is helpful to stay grounded and prevent

tissue depletion)

avoid alcohol and drugs

massage your body with coconut oil, esp. your head

rest and relax during the heat of the day

as far as #2, you are definitely not going to burning man to balance

your doshas, and some dosha vitiation is inevitable given the general

weirdness. stay safe, have fun, enjoy the hugs and meditate upon the

illusion...
