Hi,

I were trying to make a list of the 25(24) tanmatra´s

but couldn´t find the sanscrit names for the 11th till

the 25th tanmatra. Perhaps someone please could help

me?

I found this subject rather deep but very interesting.

Probobly there be more questions when I probe deeper

into this subject.

Also I have some tantric friends who speak about 48 of

these tanmatras according to the kashmir shaivism

system. Any thoughts?

1. Purusha (pure consciousness/spirit ... Brahma??)

2. Prakruti (primordial nature)

3. Mahat (cosmic intelligence)

4. Ahamkara (ego)

5. Manas (conditioned mind)

6 - 10. Tanmatras: (subtle elements, primal measure)

- Shabda tanmatra (tanmatra of sound)

- Sparsha tanmatra (tanmatra of touch)

- Rupa tanmatra (tanmatra of sight)

- Rasa tanmatra (tanmatra of taste)

- Gandha tanmatra (tanmatra of smell)

11 -15. Pancha Jnanendriyani: (sense organs)

- Ears

- Skin

- Eyes

- Tongue

- Nose

16 - 20. Pancha Karmendriyani: (organs of action)

Dear Kris,

Ayurveda is one among the many ancient Indian sciences.

In those times there was a free exchange of ideas among various

sciences and each adapted the ideas of others if needed by modifying

it as neccesary.

What you are trying to study is a part of Indian philosophy which

deals with the question "how was the universe formed"

This is called as the "Shrusti-Utpatti Siddhant" or "Theory of

creation of the universe"

As you may be aware there were many branches of Indian philosophy and

each had his own idea about how the universe was formed.

The basic elements which formed the universe are called as "Tatva".

We have branches which state that there is only one tatva, some which

say there are two and so on.

The most poular among them was the "Sankhya" school of philosophy.

They counted 25 basic elements. They defination of a "Tatva" is an

element which can further give rise to another elemnt quite different

from itself. When we reach to the level of mahabhuta as you have

described the proliferation of basic elements stop and the entire

universe is then formed from a combination and permutation of this

basic elements.

Hence your search for 25 (24) "tanmatras" is not correct, it should

be 25(24) tatvas. Kashnir Shaivism is also a school of thought and

though I am not well versed with it, I am pretty much sure they must

have described 48 tatvas and not tanmatras. "Tanmatras" are the

tatvas formed from "rajasik ahankara" and "tamasik ahankara" which

are types of the tatva "ahankara". These are also called as sookshma

bhuta or subtle elements. They are only five in number and are named

as you have described them. The manisfestation of these elements in a

more solid form is done by the panch mahabhuta and they are perceived

by the pancha Nyanendriyas. As you wanted here are the Sanskrit names

of the tatvas you were not able to find. Though I am confused as to

how you got the names of the first ten and not the other 15.

As to your suggestion that there may be 24 or 25 tatvas by your

writing 25(24), the fact is that Sankhya mentions 25 elements. In

ayurveda this theory has been accepted with a slight modification.

Over here the first 2 elements of Prakruti and Purush are counted as

one. It is called as Purush or Atma. Hence we have the count of 24

elements. The reason for this is that Prakruti or Purusha

individually are unable to initiate the process of creation, but

toghether they iniate the process and hence are counted as a single

element.

Hope this satisfies your query

Dear Cybervaidya,

thank you so much for your help and answear on my

question about the tatvas (tanmatras as I wrongly

wrote). I have been away for a while and therefore I

couldn´t thank you until now.

It is truly a blessing to have such a place where

learned schoolars put some of their time to help those

who want to learn.

Thank you so much.
