Guest guest
Namaste! Sri Vinod had pointed out earlier in one his posts that one could add ginger to boiling milk and make curd out of that - makes for easier digestion. I am wondering if we can add any herb , say brahmi and make curd out of brahmi milk. Since milk is a recommended anupana for many herbs I see it advantageous to make curd out of milk boiled with herbs. Is this permissible as per Ayurveda? -yogaman
Guest guest
Dear Yogaman, Technically that is possible. But you should be careful which herbs you use for that purpose. The herb should not have properties opposing to that of curd. Though there is no direct mention of use of curd in such a manner, there is a process of preparing medicated ghee where the medicines are added to the milk itself (boiled alongwith milk), which is then curdled, the butter is obtained by churning the curd and finally it is heated to prepare ghee. It is beleived that ghee prepared in such manner can reach the smallest of strotases. Cybervaidya
Guest guest
Of course this is often done but is only properly done if the prakruti of the person taking the curd is clearly defined. Example since age of 60 I have taken daily curd that has had Shanka Pushpi (in small quantaties with honey) but this approach must be carefully analyzed as the curd must be fresh and not have stong sour taste. Also according to scriptures curd should not be taken at night - my observation is that sour curd taken at night causes many Ama problems for various reasons. Also this kind of old sour curd i beleieve is against Lord Krishna's injunction not to eat sour food. In my own case I find fresh curd or buttermilk with minnimum sour taste to be a very refreshing and nourishing food which is easily digested even by children and the aged and sick - my family eats fresahly prepared curd from healthy cows daily - with no ill effect. Guest guest
Could you explain curd, as well as how to prepare it?? Bon
Guest guest
Namaste Vinodji, Sour taste is what increases mental acuity; so certainly it is very refreshing esp. for those who do a lot of brainwork. Whenever there is an excess of vata, it is very surpising how a little bit of sour taste (eg - soy sauce, which has the salty taste as well, also pacifying to vatas) can help great reduction of excess vata symptoms. There is no explanation for this in conventional medicine. Curd even freshly prepared is probably not good for people with the kapha dosha. For kaphas, they can make a preparation with curd which is just as good as fresh curd (called "puleesheri" in Malayalam, I think you know what i am referring to). I think Lord Krishna's statement meant primarily to stale and fermented foods. One of the classic yoga (Yogakaivalya upanishad?) books also proscribes sour food, but considering how refreshing taking fresh curd is, I cannot believe that this applies to fresh yoghurt. Lord Krishna also classifies garlic and onion as tamas but garlic is a rasayana for those of excessive kapha dosha. In this regard I like Swami Sivananda's suggestion that one must eat what we feel is best for us- Swamiji himself used to take a lot of pungent and hot food, though in his books he advises against eating pungent foods; simply because it had no adverse effect on him and/or that he far was beyond the preparatory stage in pranayama where stringent restrictions on diet are often placed. -yogaman ayurveda, vinod3x3 wrote: > Of course this is often done but is only properly done if the > prakruti of the person taking the curd is clearly defined. > > Example since age of 60 I have taken daily curd that has had Shanka > Pushpi (in small quantaties with honey) but this approach must be > carefully analyzed as the curd must be fresh and not have stong sour > taste. Guest guest
Bonnie: Curd is the same as yoghurt. Heat milk to boiling point (when it bubbles up) and let it cool to room temperature or slight warmth; then add some previously made fresh yoghurt or commercial yoghurt with live culture and wait a day. And Bingo!, you have fresh curd. Note that if you dont boil the milk, then the taste of curd could be different due to some other bacterial culture being present. -yogaman ayurveda, "bonniect" <bonniect@c...> wrote: > Could you explain curd, as well as how to prepare it?? > Bon
Guest guest
Thank you, I will try that. I assume plain yogurt is in order here? Bonnie
Guest guest
I agree with you thast the Lord´s injunction in no way applies to fresh yogurt - it is only old yogurt that I was referring to. My father and our guru always stated that sour taste is not appropriate at all for married men as it weakens sexual energy.
Guest guest
Is there vaidic experience or justification on Lord Krishna's prescription on avoiding 'sour foods' Vinod
Guest guest
Can it be generalised that sour taste weakens sexual energy. Amalaki with a predominant sour taste is used extensively in Vajikaran and Rejuvenation. Vinod
Guest guest
Hi Vinod: I have had no sexual energy for way to long. I take Amalaki, as well as others that promise help in that area. My Libido is gone. I blame it on stress, depression, the allopathic medicines. I eat yogurt once in a blue moon. I also received another Virus check.
