Dear Bonnie,

Yoga means union. That means union with self, others, our environment and the

universe on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. Yoga itself is

the technology to help achieve union. Since it "unites", it draws on other

disciplines. One of those is Ayurveda.

Dear Guru Khalsa:

I have a question. What are the similarities between Ayurveda and Yoga? How are

they integrated. I know we are talking body and mind, but would you please make

it more concise for me?

With thanks:

Bonnie

Bonnie,

Ayurveda and Yoga are like comparing Exercise and Western Medicine.

However, unlike the latter combination,

Ayurveda is a science of Herbal Medicines and Dietary recommendations, and uses

Yoga for 3 purposes---its meditative value, its exercise and toning up the body

value and for stimulating or regressing certain body points, which may have

effects on the neuro-endocrine system.

The 2 are not synonymous. And the body does not get the Herbal or dietary help

in Yoga, if practiced alone, unless one integrates it with Ayurveda. At the same

time, one does not get the beneficial value of Yoga, unless one integrates it

with Ayurveda. The 2 are mutually beneficial.

Does the Yoga draw you in automatically to Ayurveda?? I want to learn as much

as possible about this wonderful combination. Thank you for taking the time to

answer, I do so appreciate it!

Bonnie:

The philosophical basis for Ayurveda is called Samkhya; Of the

traditional six classical philosophies (shat-darshanas), samkhya and

yoga are sister-philosophies and go together much beyond the

excercise-medicine analogy. For a good source on the interlacing of

yoga and ayurveda, read books by David Frawley (vamadeva shastri) and

Vasant Lad.
