Hi Vinod

whereas the question of cholesterol and its role in atherogenesis is

perplexing (esp. given the drugs such as the statins which inhibit

cholesterol and CoQ10 synthesis), a variety of other mechanisms have

been identified as potential candidates, including hyperglycemia

(elevated blood glucose) and hyperinsulinemia (elevated blood insulin).

This fits with the relatively new diagnostic classification of

"metabolic syndrome x," in which diseases such as "hypertension" (which

isn't really a disease at all, but a symptom, like anemia),

atherosclerosis (the dominant cause of hypertension), NIDDM, and even

cancer are all linked entities:

here is an online reference which describes how hyperglycemia causes

atherosclerosis:

articlerender.fcgi?artid=116615&rendertype=abstract

and are some that discuss the role of hyperinsulinemia:

Despres JP et al. 1996. Hyperinsulinemia as an independent risk factor

for ischemic heart disease. N Engl J Med. 334:952-957.

Sobel BE et al. 1998. Increased plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1

in coronary artery atherectomy specimens from type 2 diabetic compared

with nondiabetic patients: a potential factor predisposing to

thrombosis and its persistence. Circulation. 97:2213-2221.

the latter two can be found by searching author names and date on

PubMed:
